  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Scabs/Bites

My 9-month year old Mini Lop buck, Milo, has a scab on the side of neck, on his back, and right above his eye. I'm pretty sure they got there from his cage-mate, Blizzard (8-month old Holland Lop buck). They must've gotten into a brawl. The scabs are pointy, which is odd, but are no bigger than an inch. He's scheduled to see the vet within the next week. Blizzard and Milo and good friends - they've known eachother since they were about 2 months old. They seem fine together now... so I'm not sure about what to do. Blizzard has a scab as well.

Should I try to clean them out?

Should I even worry and just let them heal on their own?

Thanks guys.

Are both bucks neutered? If not, I would separate them if they have been fighting until they have been neutered. You can still keep them side by side until then so they have company but at a safe distance. Unneutered male bucks can fight to the death or castration... whichever comes first, it's not a risk I would take. If they are already neutered then I would monitor them closely and if necessary go back a step to neutral territory until the bickering settles down.

Bites/wounds in rabbits can quickly become infected or abcessated, and FB left behind such as claws etc can get nasty. I would suggest a prompt vet visit to check the wounds asap as in tomorrow if possible. I'm sure they're fine but you can never be too careful. I would not leave the vet visit a week personally.
