  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

EC bun wetting himself again.

Cookie became ill with EC about 8 weeks ago. He started wetting himself and the vet put him on a steriod for his kidney, they must of worked because he stopped wetting himself.
Yesterday i noticed he's weeing himself again  do you know if there's anything that he can have or is it a sign of his kidneys packing up

Normally incontinence with EC is caused by neurological damage rather than kidney damage. It could possibly be improved by anti inflammatories. It is worth discussing with your vet :)

Thank you. I'll phone the vets in the morning, we are quite away from there though so I'm hoping maybe he could advise me over the phone.
If he wants to see him we'll take him up there but maybe he can suggest something we can just collect save putting Cookie through the stress of the journey.

:( I know, I really feel for you and your family (and bunnies of course). Martin told me yesterday that you had sent him photos of Cookie and he was really pleased to get them and how he had improved.

Thinking of you.

He was pleased :D I shall miss him when he leaves. Is anyone else there as clued up as him?

 He is the main exotics specialist there. I am not sure if Jenny is an exotics specialist (she was really nice when Homey was very ill in Feb and looked after us both).

I was going to ask him next time I see him who was it best to see in the event of any emergencies. I did tell him he would have to come over once a month so sort Homey out

I just needed that £113 million to be my ticket so I could have employed him just for myself and my RU friends :D:lol::lol::lol:

LOl do you know what I said the same thing to my hubby on Saturday I'd love him as my personal vet  if I won the lottery. He's such a lovely man

 We can share him if we win the lottery. He is a very caring vet and takes a genuine interest.

I told him that if I win the lottery he will be my personal vet and he laughed and said he would like that.:lol:

Did he   is he married ?

I hope something can be done for my little Cookies incontinence :( he's such a happy boy but he hate's being bathed.

I think he just wanted an easy life just looking after my bunnies :lol::lol: It was a while ago and I am still waiting to win
Yes, he is married.

I hope he can help Cookie too. I know that he is always cautious about giving meds that may affect the kidney.

If you want to send me a PM with your personal email address or a fax number I can scan some pages in from a book "When your rabbit needs special Care"-Traditional and Alternative Healing Methods. It was a book recommended by Hugo's There.

We have all fingers and paws crossed for Cookie.

ETA - Liz did have a bunny in nappies at one point-if things got worse would that be an option :?

Hi - I sent you the pages to your email, hope you received them OK.

I was also thinking....puppy pads, they may help absorb anything if Cookie is sat on them.

How is he doing?

Thank you :) he was wet underneath this morning, I had to clean him up before work and will go and sort him out now again. I left a message for Martin this morning as I had to go to work, my hubby then phoned him back and spoke with him. I don't know what Martin said only that there is medication at the vets for us to collect for Cookie.

When I phoned the vets this morning and spoke to the vet nurse, she told me she was with Fizz when she passed away  She said I knew she was going so I picked her up and cuddled her as she died .. I'm so glad she had someone with her when she went.

Aw Karen, that has made me cry. The nurses down there are so lovely and caring - in fact, everyone is that I have met there. I am sure it is comforting to know that she was being cuddled when she passed and she was not on her own.

I hope the meds will help Cookie. Sending your brave man lots of vibes.

Austin wore nappies because he constantly dribbled mucus from his bottom rather than incontinence. He only wore them when he was free ranging to give him more freedom as he loved climbing furniture and the stairs. I changed them every 2 hours while he was out, if they hadn't fallen off first!

Thanks Liz, I couldn't remember Austin's name to look it up  maybe they wouldn't be suitable then.

Martin has put Cookie on the same course of medication he went on when he first became ill.

He doesn't seem overly wet this morning or yesterday afternoon :)
Sally has started chasing him though :? I'll have to split them if he seems stressed.

I have used nappies for an EC bun before, she was incontinent and sat in her own urine giving herself scald on her legs. Eventually she regained control so they were only needed short term.

I used cheap supermarket nappies and trimmed the elastic edges off, so they wouldn't cut into her legs. Only problem is that you need to pick out the caecotropes and feed them as obviously they're caught up in the nappy.
