  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbits In general

I have a 3 month old rabbit and she sometimes bites or nips me. Is there a way i can teach her to not bite or chew my clothes mainly? Will it be better afted she has been spayed/neuted?

Can you just give me some general things that will help with my rabbit like the best way to hold them aswell please.

Thanks Bye;););)

I'd have a go at searching the forum for the things you want to know. There are also a lot of useful articles on my website (link in my sig), and also here http://www.rabbitrehome.org.uk/rabbitcare.asp

I would think the behaviour should ease after being spayed/neutered however nipping and biting is part of the rabbit language so it will not necessarily be completely eradicated. You need to try and work out why your bunny is doing that to you, and you'll do that by identifying what happens just before. For example, with the biting of the clothes it may be s/he wants your attention, or if you have stopped stroking, wants more strokes, or s/he is bored, so its hard to say. To work out how to beat it, its important to work out why s/he does it.

Sky, I've read that it's also helpful to watch what position the ears are in when the bun bites. Is this so?

Yup. Watching your bunnies body language is hugely important, but it can take a while to learn that language and what they are communicating to you. The ears and the tail are very important when working out their mood and feelings.

Be confident and don't wrap her in cotton wool. If she does something you don't like let her know-like a superior bun would in the warren. And once you get the hang of picking her up, don't give in to her if she struggles. Hold her and reassure her. Give her a treat etc. Spaying does help but buns can still be awkward if they don't get their own way and soon learn how to play you to get what they want. :)
