How rabbit savvy do you consider your vet is?

A previous thread by Chul got me thinking about this. Thanks Chul. I booked Basil in for his neuter (early November) yesterday. I have already, a very high opinion of our vet, but I was even more impressed when I was issued with a special little leaflet telling me all the things I should know and telling me to bring in his favourite food and toys and any other rabbit that lived with him (Basil is currently single though). They also sell a selection of good quality rabbit food, dried herbs and hay. Can't speak highly enough of them.

Thats great sounds like you have a fab vet :D
My vets good too (although urs sounds better!) He specialised in small animals so knows rabbits very well. Hes also very gentle and softly spoken with my buns which is a huge thing for me. Oh and he listens to what i say and takes it into consideration  I trust him with them which is a huge thing and i feel very lucky having read many ppls bad vet experiences on here xxx

Pretty good, but I always run any problems past Lou first as she definately knows more than the vet!

Haha, I don't think mine was rabbit savvy at all, but I'm guessing you already got that image!

Whilst I don't necessarily agree with it my vets Dad used to breed rabbits when he was a child so although that doesn't mean he's going to know everything about them it has given him a very gentle nature with them. He handles them brilliantly even the awkward ones.

He appears to have a good knowledge and what I most respect is that if he doesn't know he will say so and go and find out from someone who does.

He also talks to me at my level, by that I mean he understands I do have a bit of a clue about rabbits unlike some owners he see's so he doesn't patronise me but still makes sure I understand what he's saying.

I've moved vets numerous times before for poor handling, refusing to spay females etc etc and I am now finally happy i have one I can trust.

My vets are great. What they don't know, they are willing to find out, and they are willing to try different and new things. Also, one of the vets at the practice is now doing the Exotics course and so will have even more knowledge then, which excites me greatly.

Mine are not in the league of Jane's Christabel, but they are far better than the average, and certainly better than all other vets in this area.

my vets started off quite bad when it came to rabbits now though they've improved hugely! they also listen to me which is good because i always do research into my rabbits symptoms and suggest what it could be if they seem abit lost and have been proven right on a couple occasions (I did have help from people off here to suggesting what teh problem could be)

gosh - that IS good - more vets should do that!

Im very lucky that I live near the Edinburgh Uni Vet School, they have vets that have specialised in rabbits, its wonderful! :D

I'd say my vets are very rabbit savvy.

2 there are 'small animal' vets and one is an exotics specialist.

The 1st, who isn't the exotics specialist trimmed Biccy's nails as the nurse wasn't available and only charged me the nurses fee.

The two i mention, both have their own rabbits also, which is a nice feeling inside.

Very, very, very rabbit savvy. She is specialised in the small furries (exotics specialist) but particularly deals with rabbits. She is known for her work on the otherside of the world! She is also incredibly well known for the dental work she does and frequently gets referals from other vet clinics to do dentals on larger animals (dogs etc) even though she is a predominately small animal and reptile clinic. She has a photo up on her wall of her doing dental work on a tiger

ETA - should also say that she provides up to date leaflets on the small furries. She is also the only place in the state to sell Oxbow - but then also caters for those that can't afford it, with her own pellet. She sells hay and litter too as well as some rabbit toys.

My vet is fantastic, he is called my vet 24/7 as he really is the only vet there. He never has a holiday  When I had to take Butterfly down at 10.30pm on a bank holiday monday he was there waiting for me and he had already been there since 6AM in the morning. Now thats what i called a dedicated vet. He is great with bunnies, i really do think he is fantastic.

But where ever we all are livnig its always good to have a vet that know's bunnies and you trust as we can't all go to the same vet

im so happy we all have vets we trust with our bunnies and feel they will be safe if they ever have to go and stay over night.

Thats amazing! My vet is good when she is working, but out of hours it is impossible to get hold of her.

I know that being in Canada here that makes it harder to find a rabbit savvy vet. We found one that we are sooo happy with. We had taken our 4 year old girl in to get spayed with a different vet that was supposed to be rabbit savvy. She told us our little girl was in perfect health and could see no reason why we should put her through the "unnecessary" procedure. Hadn't heard of females getting cancer and said most rabbits had to come back for complications from the spay..... :censored: Anyways as you can imagine we immediately started looking for someone new to look at her instead. We came across our vet that we are using now and he is AWESOME. He immediately put our girl on a diet and was willing to see her at a discount after hearing what happened with the previous vet. He has beds of grass for us to put our little girl on to calm her down in the vet's office and he is currently working on spaying/neutering rabbits that are in danger of being pts on one of our University grounds after people continually dumped their pets there. He has also arranged for many of them to be transported to a ranch in Texas to live so that the University cannot put them all down. Just a couple of weekends our little girl went into stasis and he saw her immediately and I called every day and he would spend time with me on the phone running down how she was doing for a whole week!!!! We love him!!!! Just wanted to give him his kudos for his work with rabbits and his help with our little girl!!!! When we had taken her in for the spay he recommended we didn't go ahead until she lost some weight but my boyfriend had taken the time off work specifically to do it so he's agreed to pick her up and drop her off when we do finally go ahead!!!

Can you tell after this long homage to my vet that I  him??? LOL

My local vet is the Beaumont Hospital at the RCVS, so I'm quite lucky. They have a small animal section with its own waiting area, which has various stuff to buy, such as hay, treats, etc. I've seen two vets there so far (well Sergeant has anyway!), as well as a student vet (always supervised) and they were great. My only gripe is the inflated prices they charge!

We are very lucky in that we have a great vet in more than 1 sense. She is extremely knowledgeable, has her own rabbits, offers a 24 hour emergency service and is 100% trust worthy. What I like about her (among other things) is that she is always completely honest with us and I know for a fact that she os not in the business to make money.

We use that vet for some of our dogs at Dogs trust. They are good.:)
