Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

VHD vaccine what does your vet say about cylap

DaydreamBunny

Alpha Buck
My rabbits went for a myxi jab today and I asked the vet about VHD vaccines and he said that it is unfair to compare two different vaccines as the one has been around for much longer and is used more so this may be the reason why there are more reports about side effects. He also said he has never seen any side effects after giving cylap.

my vet has also never seen a reaction to cylap in all the time he has worked with rabbits. he has seen two reactions *possibly*caused by lapinject though. he uses cylap all the time, but will order in lapinject if someone would prefer that.. i stick with the cylap though as my two have never had any trouble with it.

There are other benefits to Lapinject beside the side effects though. If you check the data sheet you will see that the onset of immunity, ie the time it takes to work, is only something like 6 days as opposed to about 21 for Cylap. It can also be given much earlier and although normally you probably would vaccinate such young buns it may be useful if there was ever a large outbreak locally and you wanted to protect them.

My vets were saying it's exactly the same thing in lapinject and cylap anyway, but they did order lapinject for me since I was bringing in all four at once.

My vet has changed the vaccine they use for all buns to Lapinject because they had too many reactions with the Cylap.

The thing is, how many people actually tell their vet about side effects from either vaccine?

The first time my boys had Cyclap they were fine. This last time all four were very subdued the next day, and Clo had a gassy tummy and needed tummy rubs and gripe water before he would eat.

I will be mentioning these side effects when I next see my vet, and will consider asking to try Lapinject next time to see if there's any difference.

Interesting reading these posts...

My bunny had her VHD vaccine about a week ago and it took a good 5 days for her to be back to normal.

I may call my vet after reading these posts and see what one they used. Her side effects were as if she was drunk, she was unstable on her feet and very quiet. Also where she had been injected the skin was a small raised bump.

Has anyone else found this after a bunnys had the jab?

My vets now only use Lapinject as a result of what happened to my bunnies in 2008 when they reacted very badly after Cylap was used.

They should have given you a detailed invoice which will say which vaccination was used
