Ferrets and Bunnys

I have rescue bunnies and four ferrets - Humbug Holly Fifi and Flower  They are not kept anywhere near each other but the bunnies do occasionally see the odd ferret waddling past on their leads  I am extremely careful of course but my ferrets are fab  as are my buns and I wouldn't be without any of them.

A friend of mine keeps ferrets and guinea pigs. They're in the garden, but her garden's very small so their hutches are only a few feet apart.

Neither are bothered by the other. Apparently the guinea pigs were very skittish at first (she thinks because they could smell the ferrets) but they soon got used to it and settled down.

Not sure if rabbits would be the same?!

thank you for the replies :D

I got told it's cruel to have my 3 ferrets when I have buns even though they are in a different room because the buns would be in constant fear :(

The buns don't seem bothered by them being in the house at all...
I sat and watched them to see if they acted differently just after I got them and they didn't change at all..

Once Layla (Ferret) got out her room during free range time  I ran after her she walked past the buns without a second glance! The buns all ran to see what the new thing was wondering around!

I have 17 rabbits and a ferret. The rabbits are in sheds outside (and 2 in my bedroom) and the ferret has a ferret aviary in the outhouse.

I would have thought they'd get used to the smell. I don't suppose it's much different to people keeping house rabbits when they have a dog or something.

I think the most important thing would be to make sure that they're both securely away from each other etc.

I was also told that ferrets are bunnies shouldn't be in the same house (I don't have ferrets, I'd love to one day though  ). I think its almost always fine to keep them in the same house. After all, cats and dogs are also predators, and my buns love my cats/dogs. It also depends on the rabbit. Timid rabbits might be afraid at first if they smell the ferrets.

Ive kept ferrets for over 20 yrs....Im also a Bunny Mummy to 4,as of 2 and a half yrs ago.
The ferrets are kept in the garden...opposite end to the buns.(2 buns are indoors).
I would NEVER trust my ferrets, despite them never being used for hunting...not even to walk by.
I have been told about the smells affecting each species. They dont seem bothered but that doesnt mean to say they arent.
I handle the buns before handling the ferrets.Ferrets have the more scent.....
I must admit I was worried when I had my homecheck to get Roland from the rescue but the homechecker said I dont have kids who could (not meaning to) unlock the ferret cage while buns are loose and I seem "sensible".:oops:

 I don't really see how it's different to keeping them as well as cats/dogs. As long as you're careful which it sounds like you are being.

I think it is different,Nicola.
but being careful is the key here!!

I know the precautions you need to take would be different but I think the principle is the same is what I mean :) obviously you wouldn't let a ferret loose near your bunnies whereas you might let a cat near the bunnies, but you wouldn't just bring your new cat home and lock him in the bunny room unattended all day, you'd socialise them together etc.

I have both too. Neither are bothered by the others!

When I first got the ferrets I thought the rabbits would avoid the area their cage was in, but for the first couple of weeks it was the first place they would go! But now they don't even notice them. They're quite happy to flop out in front of the ferret cage!

As others have said, I wouldn't let them socialise together, but they aren't botehred by each other's presence.
