P@H Adoption

unalakey

Mama Doe
Dont want this to turn into a P@H rant but could someone explain the P@H rehoming section? I went in my local one today to pick up some straw for my buns as the weather is getting cooler. I have not been in for a while and they have made some alterations including reptile section and grooming unit:? The adoption section had moved and is now next to the front door, had a look and the rabbits that were in rehoming were old P@H stock, I say old in fact two buns were both 4months old, it said 'all of our brothers and sisters have been sold and we are too old to sell'. How is 4 month old too old to sell:( Its really upset me, it took me all my stregnth not to bring one home. There were degu's also and hamsters. I feel that the adoption centre in my local P@H is just being used to get rid of old stock, surely this is not right? When i asked what the going rate of adoption fees they said '£10':?

Write to their head office and complain
won't change unless people moan

To put "old" stock in their adoption parts make a mockery of all rescues who work their butts off to find homes for unwanted pets:cry:

This happens quite often in my local pets at home athough they do get a lot of animals being bought in aswell (a whole litter of 8 week old babies were left in a box on the doorstep once!).

They do also take in unwated pets although they don't make much of an effort by having them neutered etc.

Would you prefer they returned the unwanted stock to the breeder where they would probably just be killed?

Most of us would prefer they didn't sell rabbits at all, but I think the current situation is probably the best it could be whilst they do continue to sell them.

My local P@H has 'Ice a female White Red Eyed Lop Eared Girl, who is now too big to sell'....(Waltham Abbey if anyone is looking for a female bun!)

I nearly found myself coming home with her, but somehow managed to resist. My two are plenty...

my sebastian was old stock :(

When they bring new bunnies in they hope to of sold the old litter. They cant mix the two litters in, so plonk the old ones into the adoption centre

It's nothing to do with being too big or old. They can't sell them as people are more interested in baby buns, and can't keep them with the stock as they are approaching hormonal age. They have no where else to put them it seems, and because they are seen as less sellable they want to cut their losses so to speak. Pets at home stinks. As for adding a grooming area... Oh my god. I visited two stores literally on opposite sides of the midlands, both had long haired buns full of mats and tangled with wood shavings. Grooming my eye! I did complain and explained the health risks of leaving these buns in such a state. One store did groom him. I checked and took photo's. The other plucked him out tossed him round and said they would give him a brush. Don't know if they did, I couldn't go back to check as i'd have been arrested for assaulting the barbarian idiot who had no concern for the poor creature. he could well have injured the rabbit with the way he handled the poor bun.

A lot of their "old stock" is shifted in to the adoption bit because if they intorduced more "stock" (urgh horribe term for furrys) to the pen with one remaining rabbit or hamster or whatever then they will more than likely fight. I do think its wrong to class them as "rehome" but its better than the alternative. As previously said they do take in peoples unwanted pets as well. I'd rather they did the "rehome" than killed their "old stock" I heard from a girl who worked there years ago she left after being asked to ring a rabbits neck. She told other horrific tales about disposing (not herself but the shop) of older or sick animals. Also the rehome section at my local P@H donates all the cash from the adoption fee to a local animal sanctuary they don't keep the cash they get for these animals. I think they are deffinately trying to clean up their act.

I adopted a hamster from my local pah he was pah stock but he was in there from the start as he came in with a bad eye so went straight in the adoption centre i'm just glad he wasn't sent back to the breeder as he is a little darling. I asked about the adoption donation and was told he was between £4 and £5 so i paid £4.50 but i was always under the understanding that a donation was your choice but my pah ask for half of what they sell them for

I paid £5 for Gemma. She wasn't 'old' stock but an unwanted bunny handed into P at H to rehome. She was a house bunny and I guess her previous owners probably couldn't cope with her destructiveness. Fortunately, I am not materialistic:D

This is just what I was about to say  I understand why it's upsetting but it's better than the alternative. As long as it is clearly labelled that this is what they are, I don't really have an issue with it. I have looked at a hamster there before who I thought was a rescue but I asked the guy and he was just "old stock" which annoyed me. Couple of my gang are from P@h adoption and they are rescues, not "old stock"

Could anyone explain to me how this is consistent with the P@H statements that:

  • P@H - Where Pets Come First.
  • Pets at Home offers the ultimate pet shop experience. It really is a paradise for pets and pet owners. (From website).
  • All our small animals are bred by reputable specialists (From website).

I am afraid that I don't understand.:roll::roll:

I agree with the above.
I got a hamster from the adoption section of my local P@H a couple of days ago. (I only went in to buy cat litter tray liners.) The reason why the hamster was there was that she was shy. (I though that she probably bit somebody.:?) I asked the shop assistant who confirmed that she was one of their own stock and they did not want her to end up with a child, as she needed to be tamed gradually. At least they bothered to rehome her (and make sure that she ends up with the right people).

In an ideal world there would be no breeders or pet shops selling livestock. Sadly, this isn't going to happen any time soon.:(

In my local P@H's they have told me the donation is at the discression of the rehomer- although they usually have a recommended amount. At the one in Middlesbrough it clearly states the setion is sponsored by a local rescue, and there is a catologue of available cats and dogs to browse through. I find it very hard to comprehend that as sponsors of the section the wouldn't insist the buns are at least vaccinated if not neutered- but I don't think they do small animals at the actual sanctury

I have 3 pets at home adoptions 2 were stock, but they were special needs animals, 2 VERY agressive male guineas, kept singly, Basil my PEW is now the tamest guinea ever! had him about 6 months, the new one mocha hmm lets just say I can't handle him without iron filled gloves! and then my baby Crunchie, he was called robbie the rabbit! :/ he was unwanted cos the owners were moving from a house to a flat and didnt want to take him, x

So would you say adopting a rabbit that is old P@H stock is the same as getting a rescue rabbit:? Or is it not just creating space for them to restock their shelves so to speak? All rabbits deserve a home i know but i feel if i went and 'adopted' a rabbit out of the adoption section that was old stock its just the same as buying one from the pet shop:(

I see what you're saying, but although getting an old P@H stock animal is not the same as getting a rescue animal, it is not the same as buying an animal from the pet shop. The donations given to P@H to get an animal from the adoption section all go towards local animal charities. So, you don't fund the pet trade.

I would choose a rescue animal any time, but I don't regret getting my hamster from the P@H adoption section, for the reasons that I described in my previous post.:)

When I spotted Rascal in the P@H adoption area, I also thought he was old stock, but when I asked for details I found out he'd been handed in as part of an unwanted litter, and they knew nothing of his history. My local P@H never seems to put old stock in there. My main complaint with P@H is that it's too easy to adopt from there, you could just walk in, adopt the bunny, and walk out without any home checks or even I.D

When we adopted Rascal, all we had to do was sign papers and put our adress down, we were never asked or proof of age/etc and they never phoned up OR did a home heck  I could of turned Rascal into a pie for all they know!
