Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Bugs, Bunny, Witje and Me :)

Hello,

Im Charita (from the Netherlands, my english isn't very good but I'll do my best :)), 21 years and I have 3 Rabbits.

Bunny: Dwarf rabbit, 1,35kg, Chinchilla color/grey, Female (sterilized, they didn't take out the uterus!), 4,5 years old.

Bugs: I have Bugs only for 9 months but I've spend more money on him then my other 2 rabbits there whole lives :p
I took Bugs away from a place where he's been 'dumped'.. If I didnt take him away from there, he would'nt be alive right now..
A merchant would take him, if I didnt, but because Bugs is'nt 'normal', he would'nt breed with him..Bugs would only cost him money and we all know how bad breeders are...

I hope that people here can help me with my rabbits..

Welcome. It seems liek you are already doing everything yuo can and you have such lovely bunnies and they have a great living space. :)

My rabbit Grimlock had abscesses in his jaws under his teeth. He was given penecillin injections every three days for eight weeks. I gave him the injections myself at home and it cleared up and didn't come back. I know this isn't in the ear but perhaps something similar can help?

Rabbits can only have very few antibiotics by mouth as they can cause sickness so that's why we used injections. Good luck he seems like a lovely rabbit. :)

Thank You!..

I use Duplociline and thats a peneciline (biciline).. there are 2 kind of active substances in it..
I give it every two days..
I inject it also myself and peneciline is deadly if they get it in there mouth..

I flush with saline with baytrill.. Baytrill is not dangerous for rabbits.. It could even help to fight the bacteria in pus..

There is a honey that people use with rabbit abscesses. I have never used it but I know people on here have. It's called Manuka Honey.

Perhaps someone who knows about it can help, but you pack the wound with the honey, that leans it and also stops it closing.

I did a lot of research on rabbit abscesses when Grimlock had his, I also found a treatment where they clean the abscess and fill the hole with a sort of cement made of antibiotic beads. It releases the antibiotics slowly over time and can last up to a year or even more. This is very long article, but it's what I read that gave me the most information about the whole process.

I was advised that as Grimlocks' were in his jaw in his tooth roots the beads wouldn't work, but the penicillin injections did work. Good luck, you obviously care very much about your rabbit, I hope you can find the right treatment for him.

Hoi!

Your rabbits are very cute and very lucky to be with you! What part of The Netherlands are you from? My husband is Dutch and from Groningen.

Tot ziens,

Alison

Hallo Alison,

Ik woon in Drenthe :)

@Jenova..

I know about manuka honey but the rabbit specialist don't have experience with it.. So he didn't recommended it, because he didn't know how Bugs will react on it..

Im gonna stop flushing from this moment.. Bugs can relax now and im gonna find out whats the best for him.. I think it has to reopen again and i hope that there's something to put into the hole/cape/wound so it can't close..

I talked to someone from here who used manuka honey UMF 25+.. But i don't know which one i have to take..

Tomorrow i get an email from the rabbit specialist..
