  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Xeno 450 and bloat

Does anyone know if there is a link?

Floppy was at the vet on Monday and they put a vial of xeno 450 on him for mites (can't remember which ones but they took a scraping off his back).

On Tuesday morning he seemed slightly quiet, but nothing much. He suddenly went downhill by late afternoon and was very poorly. Vet diagnosed and treated for bloat.

It has taken Floppy until today to make a almost full recovery.

The vet thought it could have been the mite treatment. It was put on the back of his neck so he couldn't lick it.

Anyone else had problems with xeno 450?

Not that i'm aware of. Being an insecticide it is possible it could cause caecal upset - however, Marie Kubiak posted on here the other day about Ivermectin and how it is safe for oral use in some species, so won't cause harm if ingested.

I therefore think it is much more likely that whatever is causing Floppy to be run down enough to get mites in the first place, is what has triggered the bloat episode, that combined with the stress of the vet trip could easily be enough to set the bloat off.

I'm glad Floppy is almost better now. :)
