  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Baytril by injection

I have the idea lodged in the back of my brain that vets can give a longer lasting dose of baytril by injecting it - or is it just quicker acting rather than longer lasting?

Ah I must have been getting it muddled with the long acting painkiller they sometimes give, I couldn't quite remember :) Thanks Jane x

There are some antibiotics (such as oxytetracycline) which can be given in a LA injectable form.

You might be thinking of the fact that the efficiency of baytril is increased if it is given by injection instead of orally on a once daily dose. I think it's something like 72% effective compared to 60% orally, although I can't quite remember the exact details. They're in my RWA conference notes somewhere!

My vet gave baytril 50ml- he then didn't prescribe any additional antibiotics- do you know what this means? x

That your Vet considered that a course of Baytril was sufficient to treat your Rabbit's illness

I think/hope, that the 50mls Baytril was a typo, as it was given as a one off.

"The vet vaccinated patch, blaze and paws for mixi but couldn't do sunny as he had a shot of baytril injection 50ml i think it said"

I hope it was a typo and it was 'Baytril 5%' on the invoice !!

50 mls of Baytril :shock: gosh.....that'd clean his insides out :shock:

I hope it was a typo or there is one peed off bunny somewhere :lol:

I will double check, I'm almost positive it said 50ml. I hope it was a typo too- I give my buns 0.8ml baytril each daily max. Sunny seems okay. I've ordered some protexin pro fibre for him as he is a dental bun and can't eat hay at all. Xx
