  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Mae again

Georgeypudding

Wise Old Thumper
Been back to the vets today
She lost 40grams in one day  she is now down to 720g (should be 1kg)
She dribbles but only on one side, she eats like a pig, she runs about like a normal rabbit.
My vet is at a loss, he has told me to feed her 4 times a day, give her a bowl full of pellets and leave her for 30 mins or until she stops eating.
If she keeps loosing weight she needs to go back in a week (maybe 2 depending on rate of loss) if she doesnt put on weight he will call a specalist for me

If she gets to 650grams she will be straight back to the vets, I don't think she could last being much smaller than that

Does anyone have ANY ideas what could be wrong with her?
I'm so desperate to make her better
I think she'll probably have to come inside over winter which means I'll have to stop fostering aswell.

I just hope we can afford the specalist bills if it comes to that

ETA: just remembered her poos are small, but golden and crumbly, is that because of how small she is now?

no idea at all :cry::cry::cry:

i really hope your vet can figure this out.. poor Mae.

even if you never get a reason, is she happy?

I don't remember her thread sorry. Does she eat properly or normal amounts? The dribbling would suggest dental issues. How old is she and is she spayed? Sudden or prolonged weight loss can be indicative of several things.

Perhaps your vet could contact an exotics specialist before the situation becomes too urgent just for some ideas of what to look for. I take it she has had liver and kidney function tests done by bloods?

She eats lots, nothing stops her, like Sebastian
She had a dental on the 2nd of sept for tiny spurs, Vet looked in her mouth y'day and couldnt see any problems, everything looked fine.
She is just over a year and speyed, with no incisors either.
She had a full blood screen with showed nothing but a slightly raised protien level.

Donna - ive already said on FB but she seems happy most of the time, but i do see her in the run and she looks fed up :( I know when she stops running over to me, she will be giving up

Perhaps the next step would be a set of Xrays under GA - head/jaw, abdomen and chest? I suppose I would be wondering about masses with such weight loss, although would have expected a raised WBC/platelet count if this was the case.

I suppose when he calls the specalist, they'll either ask for them or do them themselves?
If no one does I'll ask for them to be done, thanks :)

My vet thought it would be unlikely she had some sort of cancer, if this is what you mean by masses?
I assume because of the blood test results
