  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Vets in Watford Hertfordshire

Warren Scout
I am with Medivets in Watford due to Guy Carter being Highly recommended but I have been left questioning how good the rest of his staff are.

Does anyone know of a good Rabbit savvy vet in or near Watford?

Many Thanks

Tina

That's interesting. I just pointed you both in the same direction, if there is no other vet about, maybe some gentle education might work? Two pronged attack.

I use medivet watford

Ive never had a problem with them...

Granted - I've never been in gor anything other then neuter and jabs

*touch wood*

That was the main one in Hendon though - If I have any problems then i'd stop using them. I know a few people who use the Watford branch and no-one seems to have any trouble with them... :)

 this is the vet we use! we have never had any issues with this practice:? is it the vets or the nurses?

Its no one in perticular. In Hoppers last hour he developed head tilt and the person who called me said it was a sign of EC, I have just learned that its not a sign.

I don't think the course of action they took could have saved his life as he deteriorated too fast, it has just left me a bit worried and I would like some options.

Thanks

Head tilt is a sign of EC :? Also bad ear infections can cause head tilt.

Recent research seems to find that EC does not cause head tilt. However, it can lower the immune system and make rabbits prone to infections. The large percentage of head tilt cases are due to infection. I am going from what I have been taught by someone who works and researchs extensively with vets and EC/head tilt. I have, however, seen that documented somewhere official but have not been able to find it since I saw it.

ETA- this isn';t what I originally found, but here http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Neurology/head_tilt.htm it says 'E. cuniculi, although it is not known if this CNS parasite is directly responsible for head-tilt or is a side effect of some other health issue.'

Which is some of the way there.

I use Medivet and the vet I normally choose is very good and my second choice is always competant as well.

Guy Carter at Medivet in Watford used to be my bunny vet. I honestly never experienced any problems with the branch and Guy is an amazing vet. I'm lucky to have found a fab bunny vet closer to home now.

I'm in Watford (well Abbots Langley really) and I have used Medivet Watford for Vacc's - I have only seen Guy and I don't know if I'd want to see anyone else there really.

I also use Park Veterinary Centre and have done for various animals over the last 30 years (they were Johnson and Daniels before). I understand Mr Starr is registered as Exotics specialist and he is very nice but I believe some of his ideas are rather outdated (I'll elaborate via PM if you like) I am happy to see Mel (a german lady) there who I was recommended to - she neutered both of mine. Maisy received excellent out of hours emergency care there from a young man named James (I was very impressed) there is also another lady vet who is pretty good with bunnies but her name escapes me - Daniella, Gabriella, Mariella? What I like about Park is that they are a large practice and I have never failed to get an appointment the day I have needed - often within the hour, being asked how soon can you get here? They have a small clinic within a 4 minute drive from me also. They only problem now is that they have gone to using an outside, out of hours service.

Hope this helps.

we had a bun who guy carter medivet treated that 3 other vets said pts.
she was 1 yo and had an abscess.he treated with duphapen injections every other day and also operated to remove the"sac". duphapen is not recognised but other vets to treat bun abscesses but he found it worked and he helped her live a good life for 2 more years. ps she died of a stroke nothing to do with the drugs or abscesses.
panorama only highlighted his practice for over charging..not neglect of patients and to be honest i think we would all rather pay a little more to a vet who knows about buns....

If you can find where you found that written I'd be very interested to see it. I have used MRI on a number of head tilt bunnies - some have middle ear disease which is clearly visible on the scan, others have no evidence of infection/other disease visible and have very high E.cuniculi titres at the same time suggesting EC infection alone.
E.cuniculi infects nerve cells and causes some direct damage but most is caused by the immune system's attack on infected cells. If there is new data that contradicts the previous research it would be very interesting to read and very important for future head tilt bunnies.

I've done a lot of reading about this over the past 24 hours (desperately looking for that flaming article) and can't find it. However, I'm happy to point you in the direction where you can find the bloke that I learnt from. It may be that you disagree with him, or its one of those subjective areas with different viewpoints, or it may be that its not as cut and dried as I believed, or whatever.

I'll PM you now.
