  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Really worried about my rabbit

LJRabbit

Young Bun
Last night I noticed my rabbit is having problems with balance, he hops around fine but when he stops or I pick up and put him down, he staggers with his back feet and struggles to regain his balance (although he does quite quickly). Apart from this he is perfectly fine, he's not tilting his head and is eating and drinking well. But I was wondering if it was a perhaps an inner ear infection (because of the balance problems) what causes it and how serious could it be?

BTW I'm definitely ringing the vets tomorrow.

There are various possible causes of hind leg weakness-arthritis,injury,EC.....

I would get him to the Vets in the morning for a thorough examination and appropriate treatment

Good luck.

He's just over a year old so I'm not sure it could be arthritis and it hasn't been a gradual process it seems to literally have happened overnight.

Could be an injury or EC maybe

Without an examination it's impossible to say. But I would keep him confined until the Vet sees him as *if* he has an injury he may make things worse if he jumps up on something.
