Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

VHD vacc after Spay

mclaugh

Warren Scout
Hi, Lady got Spayed about a month ago now but had a hard time of it for the first few days, syringe feeding etc.

I now need to get them vaccinated for VHD, can I do it now as she's back to her old self or should I give her more time to recover?

Thanks

As long as your Vet examines her before vaccinating her and considers her to be fit and well then yes, she can be vaccinated now :)

Thanks Jane, we're heading in tomorrow.
Are there side effects from the VHD vacc?

sorry first time bun mum here!!

I think Australia only has the CYLAP VHD Vaccine and this is the vaccine data information sheet which contains details of potential side effects :

To minimise the risk of an adverse skin reaction I would request the Vet uses a new needle to administer the vaccine from the one used to draw it up. Then massage the site of vaccination for a few minutes after administering it to try to disperse it a much as possible.

If your Rabbit were to develop a post vaccination limp it should resolve within 48 hours. In the meantime a dose of a non steroidal anti-inflammatory should help Bun feel more comfortable xx

Two brave bunnies no problems, back home eating and happy out.

Lady even gave the vet a lick, she said she'd never seen such a relaxed bun :)

Thanks for advise Jane

Great news :D

Dont get too stressed if they go a bit quiet over the next 48 hours. The immune response that the vaccine triggers can make some Buns feel a bit groggy, rather like how we might feel for a couple of days after a Flu vaccination. As long as the Buns keep eating and pooing OK they should be back to their normal selves in a couple of days. They may show no side-effects at all though!!
