  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Anxious about Patch's dental operation on Thursday...

Ambience

Warren Veteran
Patch is due in to have his teeth done under anesthetic.

He has an eye infection and has been on meds for longer than a year.

The vet now said that long term meds are likely.

He has constantly runny eyes and has just finished a course of baytril and will be on another in two weeks.

I'm really worried he wont pull through the operation.

He isn't neutered- would this be a good time to get this done also, is it possible whilst he is under or would this cause him more problems recovering?

Thanks xxxxxx

Hello :)

Is your bun having his teeth burred or taken out completely? My vet is brilliant (Jason Burgess). My bun had no underlying health problems and he offered to neuter Charlie and remove his incisors at the same time (they were terribly misaligned :(). I know that Jason wouldn't have offered this if it wasn't the best choice. He said it was better for the bun as he'd only need one lot of anesetic :).

If you fully trust your vet with your bunnies they will advise you best :)! xxx

I would give consent for them to do both but then leave it to your vet to decide at the time whether to go ahead with the neuter - for instance depending on how well he copes with the anaesthetic, how long the dental takes etc. Neutering male buns doesn't take long so it might be a good opportunity to do it at the same time as long as everything else has gone smoothly :)

Thanks i do trust my vets- i've had 7 bunnies successfully neutered with them so far. I think i'll give a call tommorow and ask. I hope they can. I don't know if 2 days will be abit short notice though. The vet said the dental won't wait. It's to have them burred rather than completely taken out. It's not the incisors that are the problem. It's his other teeth that have spikes on them, bad molar spurs. Sounds like a much better idea to get neutered at the same time xxxxxx
