Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Inner Ear Infection ctd - Ketamin as anealgesia

parsnipbun

Wise Old Thumper
Thanks to everyone that helped and PMd etc about Parsley's inner ear infection.

He had it syringed and apparently it was awful - full of puss etc - huge bits (and we had really taken him to the vet just as soon as we noticed a change in behaviour and slight smell in ear - he had only just seen a vet for his myxi a month ago and they looked in ears then). His poor ear drum had burst.

Anyway - he was in a LOT of pain the day after - really bad - and my vet suggested we used a very small amount of Ketamin as an anealgesic - about a 10th of what they use (n combination) for aneasthesia - and it worked like a miracle!!!

Apparently they have been using it this way for cats/dogs and as it is known as safe for buns were happy to try it - as bup. would have just made it worse as he was not eating due to pain and bup always stops him eating as well.

PS he is now on combined baytril/metronidozal/metacam - all quite high doses.
