Questions on cage?

I built a NIC cage and have some questions?
I am learning lots of things everyday with him and the cage, like he started chewing on the fleece so took that out.

I am wondering if it is better for the cage to be on floor or I have mine on top of table? That way he is at level with me?

He is doing great on litter box training, but do you change your litter boxes everyday or what? How do you keep the stary poops from getting onto floor??
I wrapped cardboard around egdes to keep it in?

Any advice would be great!!

I had ours on the floor that way they could free-range when I was around and just come and go as they liked. Also we didn't have a table big enough for the recommended 6x2x2, although ours wasn't 6x2x2 but rather 5x3x3.
