rose hip extract for arthritus?

That is interesting. Doyou know how it works?

The reason I like glucosamine so much is that it has NO pain reliever (analgesic) action at all. It works by retoring the lubricative properties of the synovial (innerjoint) fluid. It is claimed that cartliage regeneration can occur with Glucosamine. The protein component is negligable.

If it works well for an individual it should delay the actual degeneratve process.

This excites me because joint replacement is not an option for buns & certainly not in the spine for either humans or buns.

I feel that much more work needs to be done to assess the effectiveness of both.

I am interested in this too! Seriously need something for Noisette bunny as a preventative. I want to give her Glucosamine, but not keen as its from animal derivatives. Rose Hips would be a good alternative if I could get some more info on it :)

If it helps the information that the protein component of glucosamine formulated for cats is negligable comes from a very good exotics (bunny specialist) vet.

it is very interesting as we are always looking for natural products to help our bunnies!! you can get vegetarian glucosamine but from what i have read people don't rate it.
The link is the only info i have on the rose hip as i think it is quite a new thing. This is what my friend said:
here is where i got mine, it is 100% pure, and you just mix a little bit with water daily and syringe it in. or sprinkle on veggies, it has to be top grade and it has to be rosa canina.

her bunny is doing well with it and liked the taste and tolerated it

shes the only person i know that has tried it so would love more feedback!!

I think you can buy vegetarian glucosamine now anyway...

We can for humans. You'd need a specialist vet's advice whether it can be used for buns.
There are doseage considerations.
There is also cost. My glucosamine is £4 for 90. Cat glucosamine is around £60-£80 for 30 (I think) The difference really is astronomical.

 wow, that's something I just cannot afford unfortunatley. Noisette isn't in pain from it, but as a bun suffering from joint problems already, I am expecting (just as much as the vet is) arthritic problems in the future. you are right, prices are astronomical.

Gerrard the dogs glucosamine tablets cost £3 for 100 - they are advertised for humans, but are virtually the same as the ones advertised for dogs. Wish these things were more simple

I pay £32 for 90 capsules for Milly - the loading dose is 2 per day and the maintenance dose is 1 a day, so yes it's pretty pricey!

our rabbit Chelsea had a course of Cartophen injections-one a week for 4 weeks for her arthritis- this lasted 6months and made a definite improvement.

I think the rosehip question is a very good one. My Father-in-law has responded very well to it's use for his arthritic hands, and we're talking OA serious enough to have warranted operations in the past on his wrists/hands. He swears the rosehip has improved a recent deterioration. I have no idea if it would be any use or suitable for rabbits so would love some research to be done on this.

The glucosamine Nino has is about £30 for 90 capsules if purchased online, or twice this through the vet. It is derived from shellfish/marine sources (the protein component) but as Thumps says this amount is negligible. I have also heard that vegetarian glucosamine is less effective and we have certainly noticed an improvement since we started using the glucosamine so as far as we are concerned it's worth the cost. :)

i'd happily pay anything to make my Teddy more comfortable! just want to get the best thing for him...just can't decide whether to give the rose hip a go or stick with the glucosamine!

There is no reason they can not be used together Lisa. The only problem is that you would not know which was more effective or doing the job or which was causing upset - if that happened too. For Nino we did 3 months JUST NSAID to see how he responded, and then we added in the glucosamine. If he then suddenly developed gas then would know it was the glucosamine and not the NSAID (apparently glucosamine can cause gas in dogs/cats) but he has been fine. It was a good way to do it for us, we got to see the beneficial effects of both medications independently. As we tail off the NSAID we will then see how effective the glucosamine is i.e. the minimum dose of NSAID required to maintain his pain e.g. bloat episodes.

Me and my vet have decided to give rosehip ago as she thinks it may be easier on his stomach which we don't want to upset because of his kidney faliure. I shall let everyone know how i get on.

thanks pretty lupin for all your help!

Please do let us all know how you get on. I'm fascinated. Would it be asking too much to give us regular progress reports? It would give me some clues about how it works if you would be so kind.

I've everything crossed here that it will work well for you.

Yes I would be particularly interested to see how you get on with rosehip extract, one day it might be of use for Nino. Good luck and hope it helps x
