  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

gassy bellys?

casper is going to the vets tomorrow i dont know why but he seems to suffer from gassy bellys now and again not frequently or anything, vets have always given me zantac and he has been fine after but this time its happened twice in a week which has made me a bit concerned, he is fine now, but i want to know a cause of why its happened do some bunnys just get more gassy then others? or does there always have to be a cause i.e stress/illness? he seems to be fine in the morning eating then in the afternoon i go to see him and he is doing that uncomfortable strech and hunched and i syringe feed, massage his belly lightly give him some zantac (when precribed) and he is fine aprox 4 hours later? oddest thing my other rabbit never gets it so i know it cant be the food they have a little amount of exxcell pellets, greens, a little kale and mostly excell timothy hay with herbs and grass, as i say he is eating again now else he would be down the vets just wish i knew why it happens :?

IMO he needs further diagnostics as there may be an under-lying problem. Gas tends to build up in the GI tract when it (the GI tract) has slowed down (GI tract hypomotility) GI tract hypomotility can be caused by numerous health issues hence the need for more diagnostics to try to identify a cause rather than just treating the symptoms.

Good luck at the Vets.

so glad i dont have to wait long to see someone poor boy so glad he is running round now, he wont be happy to see the vet tomorrow!
