  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My 3 year old bunny who had some weight loss followed by sharp deterioration in boarding. Basically halved his weight.

He went downhill further overnight, didn't urinate although continues to pass normal stools, hadn't touched his pellets although ate some carrot this morning, but completely off his legs. Now on a drip, having antibiotics, anti parasite meds and pain relief. Poor little mite. The Vet doesn't know what's wrong yet, nothing 'obvious'. He found some fly maggots when he took his rectal thermometer out but no obvious destruction to the skin and none elsewhere, thinks it's opportunistic rather than cause but can't rule out an internal infestation. He's going to be hydrated, and they will try their best. Bloods tomorrow if he survives the night. Please send him some get well vibes, his poor partner is not happy without him. If he doesn't improve I'll bring him home to pass away with his partner near

Thank you. Just spoke to the Vet Nurse who said he's unchanged but on the drip and has eaten some liquid food with enthusiasm. A good sign I hope. She also said the Vet would call me as he wants to discuss the blood results (I take that to mean not such good news). Finger crossed for poor Eric

Thank you, I do hope so, it's pitiful to see him. He has a perfect bond with his partner who has been very protective during this short illness, if he doesn't make it it will be her second bereavement. She was abused and rescued and her poor sister died while they were together in rescue. I've really seen her come out of herself since she and Eric have been bonded and at present she is just sat alone in her run looking dejected. Poor things
