You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Cataracts in Rabbits

Does anyone have any experience with bunnies with cataracts? My youngest has bad cataracts, she said theyre the worst shes ever seen in a rabbit this young. We discussed surgery and to get the cataracts removed it would be $2000   Does anyone have a bunny that has been through cataract surgery? or has a bunny that is living with cataracts? I am so undecided on what to do about them :(

is there a difference between cataracts and a uclers?
One of mine has bad ulcers that look like cataracts. He has had a few debridments (that didnt work :( ) but other sugery has never been sugested. He is on ticail and visco tears 3 times a day in hope it will help

cataracts and ulcers-- homeopathy?

Hi, I don't think cataracts have troubled our 9 year old Bandit much. We noticed them coming on gradually-- he now has dense cataracts both eyes. He used to bob and peer when he moved about if he was uncertain about the terrain (is that what others have called 'scanning?') but now he is almost completely blind he doesn't do that anymore. But he still runs about and is very active. He does get startled easily though.
He has a mate who comforts him and calms him if he is worried. I think that is a big comfort for him. We wouldn't have subjected him to cataract operations, even when younger. He's now too old and frail for general anaesthetic.

Cataracts can sometimes be caused by E cuniculi. Bandit and Rose have both had it recently and are now on Panacur and Metacam.

Corneal ulcers are different from cataracts and i think they are quite painful. Recently Bandit developed corneal ulcers on both sides and some other problem with his eyelid. We have seen the eye specialist vet and she has checked all the obvious things and there is nothing further she can do (debridement would be too traumatic.) He is on Metacam for pain, also, just to keep infection at bay, he is on Fucithalmic eyedrops once a day and Septrin by mouth twice a day. After 10 weeks his ulcers have gotten smaller-- one is nearly gone-- we checked with fluorescein dye. But we are now concerned about one eyelid. It is bumpy, red and sore-looking along the rim.

We are agonising about whether his apparent continuing good quality of life compensates enough for the discomfort of his eye.

We tried Tiacil drops to start with but didn't have much result, so the vet changed to Fucithalmic.

If you search cataracts and corneal ulcers there are quite a few helpul posts-- I read the health forum regularly to see what others say about eye problems-- its excellent. Good luck!!!

Because we don't have any other options left I am trying homeopathic pillules-- Euphrasia and Hepar Sulph--- anyone tried this?

They are definately Catataracts, the vet has looked at them numerous times, she loves Checkers and always comes and gives him a cuddle when I visit, I think its because shes known him since he was a tiny baby (2 weeks old) and has watched him grow up :) They are not painful for him in any way (at the moment), but I understand they can become painful? and can turn into glaucoma :(

Thankyou for your help :)

I have a Rabbit with age related bilateral cataracts. She (Chloe) is 10 and she's now completely blind. But she copes very well. At 10 years of age I would not put he through surgery.

I also have another Rabbit with a cataract as a result of Encephalitozoon Cuniculi. He was on steroid/antibiotic eye drops for several months. He has now been off treatment for about 6 months and his cataract has remained stable with no signs of glaucoma.
