Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Is it possible to get rid of eye duct infections?

Can anyone give me hope? We've been struggling with Arwen's infected eyes since we got her about a year ago. Blocked ducts caused by tooth roots (x-rayed), we have identified the actual bug (via a complicated test) and are using septrin and tiacil which are meant to deal with that infection. She has her eyes flushed about every month. The medicine seems to help but not get rid of it - is there anything else we could be doing? Will it ever go away?:( After 3 weeks the gunk is stomach heavingly smelly - poor bun! My vet suggested keeping her in and flushing the duct every day for several days but he's not sure it would deal with it. Also one of the eyeducts is completely blocked....

Sorry I cant help but im just wondering if my bun has problems with her teeth. She has had constant eye infections since I got her from the RSPCA in June. She has been to the vets twice with it and they have given her drops and I was just told to continue to use them. The vet checked in June for teeth problems but couldnt find anything. Im wondering if some problem with her teeth has developed since then.

Shes been scratching like mad at her eye today and has made it bleed a little. She is booked in at the vets first thing 2moz so I will make sure she gets her teeth checked.

every bun is different

Yes, it can be possible. Bunster used to be prone to them. Things that helped clear his up were:
1. reduced stress - if he was unhappy his eye duct problems came back. For him, that meant make sure he had lots of free range time in all but the worst weathers, and no changes of living quarters (we used to have a summer hutch and a winter hutch, but the change back to winter quarters used to set his eyes off, so we cut out the summer hutch even though he preferred it.
2. no dusty hay. We get ours locally in old-fashioned bales (we are lucky to live rural), and store it with good ventilation in a cardboard crate (not plastic).

There's no guarantee any of this will help you, but it would be lovely if it does...

Lots of luck
