Dribbling? U/D: Peter is led in his litter tray and not interested in food. :(

About two weeks ago Peter rabbit had a dental. He had to have his back teeth filed down. I initially knew something was wrong because on the Saturday he did not want his favourite treat and then on the Sunday I noticed he was dribbling. I took him to the vets that Sunday and he had his dental the next day (Monday).

Anyway, this morning I have noticed that Peter has wet fur around his mouth on the one side. What could this possiby mean? He only had the dental two weeks ago?!

Thanks from a worried bunny mummy,

Tanya

He needs to be examined by the Vet again. He may have the start of a Dental abscess or some infection in his gums.

Good luck xx

Not long got back from the vets.

Vet checked his heart, temp and had a look in his mouth. He said Peters front teeth looked fine and could only see two of the back teeth. His tongue looked fine too.... and they have no idea what it wrong with him.

The vet has suggested that we try painkillers for a couple of days to see if that stops the dribbling ... and see how he is on Friday.

The vet said it can't really be his teeth this soon because they don't grow back that quick, especially when Peter had his filed as low as they thought they should go.

I have moved him back in the house so I can keep an eye on him.;)

Oh, since the vet trip he hasnt been interested in even dandelions. :?

Update...

Since the vet trip Peter has had one wee and NO poops. He has had about 3 yoghurt drops (rabbit treats apple flavour) to eat and that is it.

He is hopping around the bedroom and runs to meet me everytime I go in there.

I think I need to find a rabbit specialist ... the vet just didnt have a clue today.

Peter did not eat anything during the night. I syringe fed him about 5 small syringes of recovery food last night - and he actually enjoyed it! He was nom nomming. ;)

However, he did have blood around his mouth (before I fed him) and I am unsure what this was from, other than somewhere in his mouth.

I have checked the room and his litter tray - he did 6 small poops during the night and that is it.

I have found a rabbit vet specialist named Burgess and he is based in Gloucester. They open at 8am so I am going to give them a ring and try and get an appointment asap.

Any advice in the meantime?

Thanks.

Jason Burgess is apparently excellent.

I'd just give your Bun another feed to keep his guts going.

Good luck xx

arghhhhhhhhhh ......:( I rang the vet and Jason is operating today but the receptionist said she will get him to ring me. I think Peter NEEDS to see him. I am hoping he rings soon. :(

I am sure he will get back to you ASAP.
Meantime keep going with the syringe feeds.
Has Peter had his pain relief for today ?

You could also syringe him some cool chamomile tea, this can be soothing for a sore mouth.

Ok. Jason rang and we had to be at the vets by 9:30. It was a bit of a treck but worth it, I think. :?

Peter was checked over and the vet said his gut is empty and he is dehydrated. He also has a mouth full of puss and ulcers because he has 2 more spurrs (if thats how you spell it), which are at the back of the mouth. He had a dental THREE WEEKS AGO.

Peter has been admitted and needs to be put on a drip. He will also be syringe fed some more food and then they are hoping to do his dental later on this afternoon.

I am so sad, my poor baby boy has had a really rough time lately. I really have no idea what I am going to do to prevent him from having constant dentals. Surely this is unfair on him?

Poor boy !!

How on earth did the other Vet miss all that

Did he have his previous Dental done under GA ?

Yes he had his previous dental under GA and it cost a small fortune.

The vet I took him to yesterday checked him over for ages but DIDN'T mention that he was dehydrated, had an empty gut and actually his mouth was in a really bad state again. :(

Jason seemed to know what he was talking about .... my other bunnies will be moving to him. I don't want any other wrong diagnosis.

Peter should be having his dental anytime around now ... they had to wait until he had some strength from the liquids and food they were going to give him.

I feel sick and really nervous. My poor baby boy. :(

I really hope that Peter comes through his Dental OK

I would ask Jason for a copy of Peter's records from today.
I'd then right a stern letter to the previous Vet enclosing the notes from Jason.
Peter's condition did NOT happen within 24 hours. His mouth in particular.
I would be FURIOUS with the other Vet and I would expect a full face-to-face explanation of what the heck they were doing (or not doing).

If this is not addressed with the previous Vet then they will continue to be negligent in their 'care' of other Rabbits.

Please update us about Peter when you can xx

I hope Peter recovers from his dental OK. At least he is in better hands today. It's appalling that they could miss such obvious signs. I would definitely follow this up as Jane has suggested.

Unfortunately it's not impossible that the spurs would have returned within 3 weeks. My Herbie is a dental bun and at the moment has to have dentals every 3 weeks. He has to have them done under GA due to the extent of the problems. At best he goes 6 weeks inbetween dentals, at worst 2 weeks. He started with his problems when he was a year old and he's almost 6 now, so it can be managed.....as long as you have a good and knowledgeable vet. :)

Thank you for the replies. :)

Peter was home by 6pm. He has lots of different medicines that I need to administer at different times - I am so glad it is still half term. ;)

He has been a good boy and had about 10 small syringes full of oxbow rabbit recovery food since being home. He has also nibbled a spring green leaf and ate about half a leaf. :D

...and finally, Peter has actually had quite a few poops already. Not big ones, but hey, still poop. ;)

I missed this before now. I'm glad you have now found a good bunny savvy vet. I hope Peter makes a full recovery.

How's Peter doing this morning ?

Thank you for showing an interest. It is really appreciated. ;)

After feeding him the recovery food I left him a big spring green leaf, a small carrott, a few small cucumber sticks and a tiny bit of lettuce :)oops:).

When I checked on him this morning he had gobbled all of the spring green except the stalky bit, nibbled the carrot, and munched all of the lettuce and most of the cucumber. He still is not tempted by his Burgess pellets and hay!

I have given him his first lot of medication this morning (I think thats the one to stimulate his gut) and need to remember to give him his other medication two hours after that one - so about 8:45. I will also need to give him some baby teething gel because the vet said that will help his huge ulcers. (He happily had a cotton bud with a small amount of teething gel gently slid into his mouth last night)

Although he is eating veg, I need to give him his recovery food as well because I have some sachets of medicine to sprinkle into it. (one daily!)

I think thats everything .... for now! ;)

You are doing a fantastic job caring for Peter :D

He will only feel able to eat soft food for a few days until his poor mouth heals up. He might eat the pellets if you soften them in boiled water, mash them up and allow them to cool before serving. You could also add a bit of gratted carrot it that will tempt him.

Hopefully in a few days Peter will feel much less sore and he'll be eating his usual food.

Well done for getting him to a Vet who knows what he's doing !!
