  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit Died Under Anaesthetic

My wee rabbit Toby died under anasthetic yesterday morning at the vet. His front teeth didnt meet together and "grind" so I was told by the vet to have them removed. I had this done at the same time he was neutered at around six months. He was absolutely fine that time, however they only managed to remove 3 of the teeth. Since then I was just getting the other tooth clipped every few wks and the vet advised they should try to remove it again. So I decided to go ahead with it and got a call yest morn to say he hadnt survived the anasthetic. I was gutted. I dont know what was used or anything as I was too upset to ask these questions. I was told "it was one of these things" and that they tried to resusitate but they couldnt. He would have been a yr old tomorrow. He was healthy and I dont understand why he was fine with the last anasthetic but not with this one. Im now wary if I get another rabbit about anasthetic and the risks involved.

I am very sorry

Without knowing what GA drugs were used and what pre-op checks were carried out I cant really offer any explanation as to 'why'. However, my Vet, who GA's thousand of Rabbits, says that an unexpected loss during a GA can often be attributed to a sub-clinical lung problem- ie compromised lung function that could not be detected just by listening to the lungs with a stethoscope.

Or the particular Rabbit could just have a bad reaction to one of the drugs used in the GA. This can still happen even if there were no problems on previous occasions.

It is a shame that the Vet was not a little more sensitive. H/She could have invited you in to discuss things face to face. Of course nothing can bring your Bunny back, but how the tragic loss is managed by those involved does effect how you, or anyone in the same situation, copes.
