  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

not sure what's wrong with him but he doesn't look good...

New Kit
Tonight, our 4 year old rabbit didn't look his usual self.. he was lying down in a corner, didn't welcome me as he usually does, I fed him and usually he comes next to me to check what I'm doing and getting some food. But tonight, he stayed in his corner. He's always a bit wild, and runs away at first when we want to give him a stroke, but tonight he didn't move when I went inside his run to stroke him. When I stroke him, he was sort of shaking when I was touching the back of his neck. I tried to pick him up (knowing he hates it anyway, but I thought I had to check he could move as he was so still) , and he moved up to his hutch, so he can move quickly. After a while, he went back down in the same corner of his garden, in the same lying position, very flat on the ground.
Really not sure what's wrong with him, I will go out and check him later tonight, and if tomorrow morning, he's still the same, I will book an urgent appointment at the vet
Does anyone have any idea what it could be?

Your Rabbit needs Veterinary attention TONIGHT.
The symptoms you describe point to gut stasis which can be fatal unless PROMPT Veterinary treatment is given.

Please dont wait until tomorrow, tomorrow may well be too late

thanks for replying so quickly. Do vets hold overnight surgery? Sorry it might look silly but I've always been lucky to have healthy pets so far.

Your vet should provide an out-of-hours service - I would phone them and you should get a recorded message about what number to call for the emergency vet.

Sorry your rabbit is ill, but as Jack's-Jane said, it is important you see a vet tonight. Good luck - let us know how you get on. x
