  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

i just went out to clean my buns and i noticed a flea in there water bowl! i have never delt with fleas before surprisingly seen as i am a dog groomer you would think i would bring them home all the time and i have had my buns 8 years!, i know about cat and dog flea control but i have never heard of rabbit? i know there is shampoos but is there anything more powerful then a shampoo? they have panacure regularly but that is just a wormer isnt it?
thanks for any replys!

Eek do not wash or bath bunny with a shampoo for fleas. Rabbits are very prone to stress and bathing should not be done unless absolutely necessary, esp if bun's immune system is compromised by fleas. Can you see any fleas in the fur?

Cat and dog flea treatments are NOT suitable for rabbits and are highly toxic and can lead to death. The only licensed flea product in the UK for rabbits is Advantage made by Bayer. I would pop your buns to the vets for a definitive diagnosis.

i know about the bathing and rabbits (being a groomer) thats why i asked if there was any other option, i will go to my vets,
because i am a groomer i bring stuff home all the time i would like them to have a regular dosage anyway, i cannot see any fleas but there is some flea dirt, what a nightmare!
