  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Red Eyelids

New Kit
Our rabbit has a bit of redness around the eyes and they have closed a little. I am not experienced at keeping rabbits. The rabbit is allowed to roam in our garden as it can't escape but doesn't come into contact with wild rabbits. I am keeping an eye out for the symptoms of Myxomatosis but at the moment it doesn't look like it (fingers crossed)

Is this cause for concern? Does it sound like a common condition? The rabbit still seems happy and hasn't lost its appetite. I don't want to stress it unnecessarily with a trip to the vets if it is just one of those things that they will recover from (like humans with a cold) or cured/ helped by using eyedrops.

I would be grateful for any advice.

Redness and/or swelling around the eyes is not normal i'm afraid and Myxi can be carried by flying biting insects so no contact with wild buns is necessary. I would personally give the emergency vet a call tonight for an opinion and if necessary take bunny down, or first thing tomorrow. If it is Myxi then the earlier you can get your bunny treatment the better.
Has your bun been vaccinated for Myxi in the last 6 months?

The rabbit was owned by a family that were moving to Australia so I know nothing about the rabbit and whether it was vaccinated or not. We've only had it about 3 months.

Its not looking good then. The kids will be sad as it is really tame and plays fetch with a plastic ball. I will see how it is in the morning.

Thanks for your reply.
