  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Poorly bun

Hi Everyone,

I need some advice, I will give you some history first.

On Monday my bun, Dancer, was just not himself, he was hunched in a corner, was not playful and just subdued so I took him straight to the vets. The vet said his gut was a little full and advised me to give him pineapple juice and veg which I did...a few hours later he seemed to be in more pain so I took him back again the same day and the vet gave him a painkiller and advised me to continue with the pineapple juice. This seemed to help for a short period of time but then the next day he started to act the same way. I took him back to the vets and they said he was doing ok and also gave me Lax a Past - this is for fur in the gut. Yesterday I was again back at the vets as he was hunched up and grinding his teeth, they have him a gut stimulant called Maxolan Syrup and he is on that every 12 hours. He does seem to be perking up a little, we have continued with the pineapple juice as well, does anyone know which veg is more likely to help keep him moving? I am terrified of giving him the wrong things and making him worse.

I would strongly advise you to seek a second opinion today from a Vet more competent in treating Rabbits.

The treatment your Vet has given/advised is at best 'non standard' and certainly not what I would be prepared to accept for any Rabbit in my care exhibiting the same symptoms.

The Pineapple Juice is likely to make matters worse. The high sugar content will disrupt the 'good' gut bacteria, thus exacerbating the problems.

Ongoing pain relief is essential. Fluid therapy (subcutaneous aswell as oral) is necessary to prevent the gut contents drying out and becoming impacted.

Is you Rabbit passing any faeces ?

If not there may be a full obstruction in the GI tract in which case Maxolon is contraindicated.

I agree with Jane, please take her advise, she knows what she is talking about!

Poor bunny sounds like he is in a bad way, I really would seek a 2nd opinion today if you have not already done so.

I have taken him to another vet today, he gave him pain relief and said to keep up with the maxolon. He has advised that he should have been given this on Monday and that he should have been given pain relief and also a Fibre supplement at that time also. Dancer has been going to the toilet although not as much as usual but this has improved immensely since Monday.

The vet advised that his gut was moving and he was making a recovery. I will still keep a very close eye on him.

At the moment he is in his cage and is eating hay, he has also just flopped for the first time in days.

Thank you so much for your advice and help.

Well done for taking him to another Vet.
I hope Bun is soon 100% recovered.

Hope he gets better soon.
So relieved you got him to the vet and got a second opinion :)
You will get lots of good advice on here :)

Thank you for your replies and help!

He is already doing a lot better, he has been moving round and jumping up on the sofa this evening and has had a drink of water from his bottle which is good. He has eaten some hay and a few pellets as well.

He is now having a little lie down, the past few days have been horrible for him but fingers crossed that this is in his past.

I'm pleased you followed the advice of Jane ...she's bunny savvy ;):D....sounds like things are improving already.

Just to add which you probably know, don't go back to the old vet!

Don't worry, I have registered my other bun with the new vet as well...the original vets I went with were supposedly small animal specialists with a good understanding of rabbits, it was why I chose them. Definately not going there again!

He seems to be, he still isn't pooing as much but it is increasing each day, he is drinking and munching his hay and is a lot more lively than he has been so the signs are good so far!

I have attached a picture of him so that you can see who you have been helping...
