  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

help would be appreciated greatly :(

New Kit
I have a rabbit which I adopted a few years ago. Her teeth started to grow very long and she had to have an operation to have her teeth removed which cost us £600 :(... within 9 months her teeth grew back and we had to pay a further £550 to have them removed again. We had to cancel our family holiday to pay for the bill but we had no other choice. The problem we have is that she started getting recurring abcesses from her gum, the vets give her Baytril everytime we take her ( roughly 4 times a year). She is getting old so operating is no longer an option.
Her abcess has come back and we have already paid a total of £1800 in vetinary bills, it is taking it's toll on our family. Is there anywhere online that I can buy the Baytril from , to give it in the shringe daily?
If anyone knows anywhere online I can buy Baytril from then please can you send me a message with the details, The sites i have found all sell 100ml which is very expensive :( Is there any sites where I can buy a small amount from? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi...whereabouts do you live? £600 is very expensive for incisor removal...I paid £130!!

I'm not sure where you can buy baytril online but I do know you'll need the prescription from your vet in order to do so....have you tried www.vetuk.co.uk?

Hello:)
Thanks for your reply. I live in Dewsbury west yorkshire. The first operation they removed the rabbits teeth and cleaned an abcess out and gave me a bill for £600. It was a struggle to pay the money but I didn't have a choice really. I was very upset a few months later when the teeth grew back fully. The vet said he could not guarantee that they wouldn't grow back again and that another operation was needed. I adopted the rabbit when neighbours moved away and left her abandoned but I really had no idea of the cost involved:( She is a very loving rabbit but constanly gets abcesses.
I have checked that site yes but they don't sell Baytril in small amounts.

Oh god :( I dont really have any advise im afraid just wanted to wish you luck. Sounds like ur doing the very best for ur bun in horrible circumstances.

Im sure someone will be on to offer advise soon xxxxx

Baytril is rarely effective on abcesses and especially dental abcesses unless used in combination with stronger off-license antibiotics, or stronger antibiotics are used in isolation - they are usually required to be injectable. There are quite a few that can be tried but isolating the pathogen/s causing the abcessation is going to be important.

Personally it would appear to me that you have exhausted the knowledge of your current vet and I would be asking for an exotic referral for a 2nd opinion, either directly - so you take bunny there to see the exotic vet, or your vet gets advice themselves from them.

Teeth can regrow following extraction but the stem cells should be ideally crushed to prevent this during the operation, I am just wondering if your bun would fare better in more experienced exotic hands.
I think you are doing a wonderful job for this bunny and obviously care about her a great deal.

If you post whereabouts you are (providing it is in the UK!) someone might be able to recommend an exotic vet near you for referral, I think this is yours and your bunny's best bet to avoid more unnecessary expense.

Oh gosh, you poor thing :(
You really should not be paying that much for the vets :(
Why not get a receipt of all her treatment, and pass it by us?
If they have overcharged you it may be worth going to a paper or something?

I wish you the best of luck, I have no idea about online medication.

Take care x x

Is it possible for you to get a referral to Francis Harcourt Brown (bunny specialist) in Harrogate?

Absolutely. She's one of the top rabbit vets in the UK - not cheap but not overly expensive. She'll talk it through with you, absolutely straight.
