  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Moulting in patches

Cookie is moulting a lot at the moment but it is not following any kind of pattern and she looks like she is going bald?! When Jims moults it looks like he has a tyre line but never looks like he is missing fur.
Is this normal?

My little bun has had a terrible moult this summer and hasn't stopped all summer. She doesn't have any bald patches though. Could it be mites perhaps? Best give the vet a call to put your mind at rest

I had a look up online about mites cause I thought it may have been that too, but there is no evidence of it on her.
On looking really close and seperating the fur by blowing on it you can see hair is underneath just very short? :?

My rabbit has the same thing every year, I thought it was mites and I still kinda do... My bun is very patchey but I combed him the other day and it's seemed to work. Maybe try combing him/her once or twice and see what happens.

This has put my mind at rest too:D. I've just found a 50p size patch of short hair on Roo when I've been plucking him, I searched for dandruff too and found none. I think I need a face mask next time I pluck a bunny though, plus antihistamine first! I could stuff a cushion with what I've just gathered in their cages.

my bun poppy goes bald in the summer too :D i thought it was mites her first year but when she went for a check up at the vets she said it was completely normal usually happens to thick double coats but it does she does look awful through the summer!

When Bungle moults he gets bald patches. The new fur usually grows within dates so it doesnt last long.
