  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Lump in dewlap :(

Off to vets with Domino, a 7/8yo rescue female tomorrow. During brushing and nail clipping I managed to feel a shocking lump in her dewlap. She has a HUGE pouch so quite surprised I felt it, but i'm really worried about her :(

Is a lump in this area usually a cyst, or more likely cancer? :( it isn't smooth to the touch (no defined edges in a way, feels bumpy) and isn't rock hard... not sure if that makes a difference?

Please think of her, poor thing had a horrid life being bred up until last year, and she deserves to have years of happiness, not disease :(

Hard to say really. Vet would probably need to do a fine needle aspiration i'm guessing. Abcesses can occur in this area also so there are a few possibilities.
Fingers crossed for you that it is nothing too serious. x

Ditto could just be a benign cyst keeping fingers crossed x

Thank you! She certainly seems very well and is acting normal and eating/ running around, so hoping it's nothing life threatening and that she'll be fighting fit soon. Nobby would miss her terribly, even though he does boss her around

Barney had an abscess there. Its best to get it sorted pretty quick, as Barney's tracked down his neck and onto his shoulder & arm pit. The vet may look at your bun's teeth, as Barney's was caused by overgrown teeth roots.

So the vet thinks that it is a fatty lump. Doing more tests and if she starts to become unwell then i'm to obv take her back before next appt.

Hopefully it's nothing major. Teeth were looking dandy thank goodness! I really didn't fancy another dental bunny
