Is pet insurance worthwhile?

I have two baby bunnies and we are wondering if it's a good idea to get health insurance for them.

There seems to be many different options for what's covered and what isn't.

My wife found one that is about 20 pounds per month for each rabbit.
That seems a lot of money to me but I don't know.

Can anyone please advise on whether they think that health insurance for rabbits is a good deal, and what sort of coverage level would be best?

If you get pet insurance, what is important to get covered and what is not?
I am in the UK. Oddly enough, some of the better deals were from Sainsbury's.

Thanks for any advice.

i think its worth every penny and cover started ASAP

Alvin has cost a fortune in Stasis episodes some were emergency vets visits too so petplan has really paid out more than ive paid them

Pearl turned out to have an enlarged heart and 9 months worth of treatment before she died was all covered, had i not had the insurance its very likely i would not of been able to cover the costs and allow her to live as long as she did.

theres also accidents to consider too, alot of buns on this forum alone have broken bones so the £2000 cover would really help in that situation

i only know Petplan and they have never let me down yet, they even paid for a vet home visit at the end of pearls life even though in the small print they say they dont

Yes, vets bills can be VERY expensive if your rabbit needs to be admitted. Go with PetPlan, they offer the best coverage in my opinion.

I just got mine covered with petplan, it costs £17 a month for both of them, they are 2 year old rexs. Having had dogs in the past and with the horse now, there is no way I'd be without insurance. Never got my moneys worth with the dogs but I certainly have with the horse.
Not worth the risk IMO, its the peace of mind. :)

Yes do get insurance, I had to pay a massive £500 vet bill when my bun went into statis (very long story as three operations needed). Needless to say both mine are now insured.

I just logged on to RU looking for an answer to the same question, and have just got an online quote for £12.38 a month for Loxxy (this includes a 10% online discount for first year). So all in all, that's £148.56 a year.

Its a risk you take I guess as to whether you take it out or simply set up a separate savings account for vet bills. I suppose sometimes you'll end up winning and sometimes losing with either option.

I can only see that Sainsburys do cat/dog insurance.

YES! Parsnip broke his leg and it cost in excess of £1500 to fix. I didn't have insurance but I did have a vet savings account which had sufficient in it to cover the cost. But I would recommend insurance if you know you couldn't find, say £2000 (per bunny) at the drop of a hat.

Absolutely yes. Steer clear of supermarket insurance policies though, in fact i didn't even know they did rabbits, because they tend to only offer cover for something the once or up to a maximum of a years treatment then it stops so if you had a long term health complaint or something that kept re-occuring they wouldn't pay out.

Petplan offer cover for life and up to £2000 a year per bun. it costs me £18 total for two.

i took it out and while still in the free first month i got a vets bill for nearly £2000 for Joe and they paid out with no quibbles at all. Their admins a bit pants, I had some bother with my direct debit when I added Jess on, but i would never be without it now, if he wasn't insured we would probably have had to have had Joe put to sleep as we've no credit cards (all chopped up in teensy weensy little pieces probably never to be allowed one again :oops::oops:) which I can't even bear thinking about.

you never know whats round the corner healthwise with rabbits and it's just piece of mind having it.

Yes, i have my two insured with petplan, so far i have had about £300 back.

Then i had my previous bun Kermit insured, i got about 1k back.

I pay £17 a month for my two with petplan. There is 10% discount online.

Yes all 4 of mine are insured, one pair is about £17 and one pair £18 - I think its worth it as I wouldnt be able to afford a HUGE vet bill. Charlie had 1 overnight stay at the vets, fluids etc and that cost me nearly £300 so me paying a years insurance I would have more than got my money back!!

I wouldnt risk not having it (unless you have loads of savings or credit cards) - go to pet plan - they do a multi pet discount

Does anybody use Exotic Direct? For one rabbit, their quote is £106.05 for vet fees up to £2000, with a £50 excess.

Petplan is £148.56 for the first year (includes 10% discount) with vets fees up to £2000 per year and a £65 excess.

Exotic Direct don't provide "For life" cover like PetPlan do. So although it's cheaper it may not provide as good coverage if your pet has an recurring illness or if they need specialist treatment.

Pet plan quoted me £23.17 for Pip

She was born in March 2010 & is a crossbreed female....With no current health complaints....

Exotice Direct have just quoted £106 for the whole year which is a bit over £8 a month!

For me this is the important bit, worth paying more for. My mum has had problems with the dogs in the past - insured with one company, which was fine, but once came up for renewal, they wouldn't cover conditions arising in previous year. She was fuming. Needless to say, she now uses petplan.

I started off with mine having a seperate account for vet fees (I have 5). Bubbles had an intestinal obstruction last month, that cost £700 to fix. I could cover that no problem, but realised that if another bun needed hospitalising in the next few months, I had no chance. We're now insured, and its a real peace of mind!

There's another thread somewhere where someone got quoted something like that for a ?one year/?six month old mini lop :shock: I really don't understand why that's happening, I have crossbeed and mini lop rabbits of similar age insured and they are between £8 and £10 a month. Previous/current health problems don't seem to affect the premium, they just make them exclusions.

I've wondered, maybe it's because they are entering a "value" for their rabbits? I always enter £0 because they are not a pure breed, and if they died money wouldn't mean anything to me anyway.

I don't think so. I was asked how much I paid for Tink, I actually paid £100 (as in rescue donation) so I said so. Her insurance isn't higher because of that. I did wonder straight after if it was a mistake to say that but it hasn't affected the premium.

That's good to know. Thanks. Still haven't had chance to look through the policy details yet, but that's something in Petplan's favour.

i don't know why but pet plan want to charge me £44/month for 2 minilops both 3 months old....so will just have to use a different company...

I'm wondering if the difference in premium is based on postcode area? Maybe Petplan are basing it on how expensive vets are in particular areas?

£44 a month does seem a lot
