Contacting vet to request Lapinject vs Cylap*updated 13/9*

VickiP

Wise Old Thumper
Hello, I am thinking of taking in a letter with me next week when Ness and Jings have their Myxi vacs to request that I would like them to consider using Lapinject for VHD, any suggestions of wording or a link to the data sheet regarding the side effects or even the thread that ran before which contained the link would be really helpful, they currently use Cylap and I have to say I haven't experienced any horrible side effects but, after reading the study that was linked on here by Cylap themselves I don't really want to risk it, my preference is for the safer one. Also is age a worry with VHD vacs? Jingle is 3+ (not sure of exact age due to previous owners not remembering acurately) is he safe to have it? Opinions welcomed ...

sorry i can't help but would it be better to phone them beforehand and then take info with you when you go? Presume they have myxi first then VHD 2 weeks later, so they would have time to get it in for you?
Would you still have the cylap if they said no to lapinject?
Some people have ahd bother with vets because lapinject doesn't keep very long once opened, I don't know if its the same for cylap but if they aren't keen you could always offer to pay for the bottle - I think it comes in 5 dose bottles so it shouldn't be too much to pay (or is there anyone close by who could take their buns and use the rest of the doses?)

There are a couple of threads active at the moment on the same subject and a lot of vets refuse to get it in as it costs more, or something along those lines.

With my vet at my parents we just ask them and they order it in for us, they usually use cylap but maybe it's worth a shot?.

Oh does it, I knew vaguely something about the vials being five per box or something and not having as good a shelf life, thing is my two Ness & Giz aren't due till Nov & Dec for VHD but, Jings has never had the vac :? I think Bluesmum uses the same vet as me but a different branch and she has two bunnies, my neighbour also uses the same vet for her English Spot.

Is Lapinject more expensive then than Cylap to 'us' the customer?

My buns have all had lapinjet - luckily its what my vet uses...
I think if my vet used cylap - i would either go to a different vet or get them to order it in for me!

I think some evidence would be good to take with you - what I always think though - is surely the vets know about the side effects? so why do they keep using it? :? i know it doesnt effect everybun but even still!

Have you ever had any probs with it?

I haven't used cylap, but lapinject was perfect, they were acting same as always, like little loonies.

My vet was fine with it though, I have my rabbit specialist who only ever uses lapinject but if I'm at my parents when they're due the booster my other vet will happily get it in for me for the same cost as cylap.

Yes my thinking was that I am in next week for Myxi so I could hand in a letter for them to discuss and think about the feasibility, it might be a long shot as they are a long established practice with a history of treating rabbits and they do use Cylap, when I queried it before the vet explained that the base of both vaccines are actually the same anyway but the Cylap one obviously does have stuff added to it which can cause the 'limp' or general unwellness - they hadn't had any reports of side affects that he was aware of though:?

Do you have publisher? If so pm me your email address and I'll forward you the sheet on pros and cons I did for my vet.

I think if it were me I'd just try to swap to a vet who uses it as a matter of course... But then, I'm a serial vet swapper, and not one who likes to do battle with vets!

Age-wise, I don't think it should pose any real issues if the bun is otherwise fit and healthy.

My little Cinnamon Bun had a really bad reaction to Cylap when she had her first VHD injection (couldnt move for 3 days and ended up with a big boiled egg sized bump on the injection site, which 3 months later still hasnt disappeared) so I shall certainly be asking my vet to try lapinject instead...we spoke about it briefly when she was ill and i got her to be checked out - he suggested that although stats say thee are less side effects with lapinject it is also not actually used as much so the results dont necessarily mean that it is any better. Personally though, i think i am ging to give it a try next time she needs the jab. Speaking of which, can someone reminds me how often that is? Every 6 months?

yes I agree with you, my worry is that a lot of bunny owners just take them for the vaccine and then pop them back in their hutch and therefore don't see any side affects, I was thinking if I could print the data sheet and take a letter in for the practice manager/head nurse - they could at least give it some thought perhaps. I might suggest getting all three done in December and therefore paying for the whole 5 vials - how much is that likely to be though? It means risking it with Jings but, Ness is covered and he has been alright for the last 3+ years :?

No annual for VHD - yes I think if mine had a reaction I would deffo insist on an alternative.

No I really want to avoid that, they are literally 10 mins down the road and I like the practice and the staff, have used them for 16 years or so with my dogs and now the rabbits and have no complaints, mine haven't reacted badly to Cylap either so I am not adament but, would like the 'Bunny' Nurse who is quite senior to read it and put it to the team of vets. They are a real mix of older and younger and I don't think they appear inflexible. Changing vets is not an option for me unless they really hack me off which would be how they treat my animals more than me if you see what I mean.

Vicky, I wouldnt worry about convincing them about changing. I just said to my vet I would like Lapin, can you get it for me before my next vacs. They said yes.

Oh I agree with you, and I admire people who work with vets to try to change views etc. It's the only way they will improve and learn, after all.
