  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Do my Rabbits need to be Vaccinated?

I was wondering if my rabbits need to be Vaccinated? My mum says that they don't but I think they should be for Myxomatosis Viral Haemorrhagic Disease!

Definately! Even house rabbits aren't safe from Myxi and VHD, which are both fatal. Vaccinations are non-negotiatable.

How often do I need to get them if I live around Hinckley because I heard it is different depending on were you live.

YES YES YES

Interestingly (and scarily) some vets don't say VHD jab is necessary & neither did the place I got my 2 from (they had it done within the first week i got them)

As Hoppit says, no question, think of the heartbreak and suffering if you didn't get it done and buns were unlucky enough to contract either. You'd never forgive yourself.

VHD is once a year. Myxomatosis varies as some places say a year, some day twice a year, however i think you will find everywhere recommends twice a year now, as its everywhere, i dont think once a year provides enough protection.

xx

My vet recommends myxi once a year, and no VHD at all. But it really does vary in different places and different vets.

yes definetly get your buns vaccinated - they are both horrible horrible diseases - look at pictures.
If you can prevent that happening for the sake of a few ££s a year its gotta be worth it!!

Myxi every 6 months
VHD once a year

Both diseases are spread by biting insects so vaccination is a must.

VHD is fatal, and myxo can be nursed through provided they are vaccinated - without vaccs it is a guaranteed slow and horrible death.

After recently talking to some people who had 16 rabbits:shock: and all of them died from myxi - I would say yes. It would break my heart if mine died of a preventable disease for a not huge amount of money
