  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

We're off the antibiotics!

Finally, it looks like Barney's beaten his number of abshe's cesses. We were back at the vet yesterday, But my poor boy is now anaemic. He's been given a B12 injection.

Is there anything I can do to help him get his levels back up?

Thats good news, antibiotics cause such havoc with tummies, regardless of the animal. i've just done a quick internet search and B12 comes mainly from meat and dairy products. Buns get their B12 from their caecotrophs, not sure how you could supplement this. i suppose once he fgets back to normal and gets the drugs out of his system, his poops will be beneficial again?
Someone with a clue might be able to help you much more, sorry :(

The injection should have got his B12 back to normal. As JLG says bunnies get it from their caecotrophs. But they also need iron, & the buiding blocks of the right proteins which are found in the green pigment of all plants.
Gradually adding grass to his diet, & safe fresh tree leaves, like bramble & hawthorn to his hay would help.
2 drops of fresh lemon juice in his water daily, will help with vit.C

oooh thanks for the vitamin c trip. the only problem is, he's still immobile so he cannot get round to eat his poop.
