Vets/medication and my rights to ask for it ?/UD.. have been given it..

Ok.... I have asked my vets to prescribe a certain medication for one of my rabbits....(6 days ago now).
When i asked about the particular meds I was told it was not one they keep in and dont ust this particular drug very often. I asked them if they would look into this mediaction as i know other vets do use it. I have since heard nothing from them...
So...What to do now ?????
Have I really annoyed my vets by asking for this ?
Also do i have any rights to insist on wanting this medication ?

Has anyone else had a problem like this ?

is this for a bun they are currently treating? Presumably theres a reason why you want this med and not whatever they would normally prescribe, but can they explain why they don't get the one in that you want? And have you explained why you want the one you've asked for?
I don't know if you can insist, given that they are the qualified ones but maybe look at another vet?
Sorry thats not much help.

Hi
Yes it is for one of the rabbits they are currently treating. The poor rabbit has suffrered reoccurring infetions and now has an abscess. They keep prescribing Baytril. Asked for a different medication. I did explain why I wanted to try this and since then i have heard nothing.

Hmmm that makes it a bit trickier because I don't think a vet will take on a bun thats already being treated another practice.
you can definitely ask for a second opinion though, or at least ask about other options for the poor bun, especially if he isn't getting better. After all, you're paying the bills.
it migth just be worth a call to another vets to explain the situation, you might find someone who is willing to take poorly bun on, as long as you're happy that overall they are better vets, not just becasue they would prescribe something else.
Or they may just have forgotten about your request, or they may be waiting for another med to arrive. I would call them, its your bun and your money!

They may be unwilling to prescribe off license. Baytril is licensed for use in Rabbits, the abx you are requesting probably isn't. HOWEVER, a Rabbit Savvy Vet would follow cascade prescribing and if the Baytril was not effective/appropriate then they can prescribe off-license. The owner may be asked to sign a disclaimer stating that they understand that the prescribed medication is not licensed for use in Rabbits.

Personally I would be seeking a second opinion from another Veterinary practice.

yes i had to do that to get Stronghold for my 2 - the vet (excellent bunny person) explained everything very thoroughly and I signed the disclaimer. Just because it isn't licensed doesn't mean it doesn't work. My dog vet and horse vet were equally as open minded but some might just want to stick to licensed stuff and you can't
blame them.
hope you find a solution :)

As Jane says they may be unwilling to use an unlicensed product- they may have had a problem it the past. You can get a second opinion from another the, you are perfectly entitled to. The only other thing I can think of is that the med may be expensive and if you are only going to use a small amount it is expensive to them. I would call them up again to find out what is happening, they may have just forgotten.

Thanks for all the answers.
There is only two vets to choose from in my local area. The first one i was with was not rabbit savvy at all. Moved to the other practice...Only for the vet to leave recently. The new vet is not at all rabbit savvy.
So I now have a problem.... All very worrying when you have 10 rabbits !!!!

Lucikly my vets have always been really good at prescribing different things and will listen to my views. I prefer to use Septrin as an antibiotic instead of Baytril. I find it easier to get bunnies to take and have always had good results using it.

Before giving up on this vet, I'd ring them up & ask if the new drug was in yet, & see what they have to say.
There are so many human steps in ordering meds from a supplier, it's amazing that it goes like clockwork so often.

Where are you? Maybe we can recommend a good vet close by?

Hi
I am right on the Surrey/Sussex border. So Anywhere in the Horley, Crawley, Redhill or Reigate area. The only problem is that I do not drive. So unless my husband is around to drive it would have to be easy to get to (unless i can train my lovely buns to only have an emergency when hubby is around )

Have just spoken to the vets and they said they will have a chat about it on Monday (am taking one in for vaccs).

AAAArrrrggggghhhhh :censored:

Perhaps if you give the name of this new drug someone on here will be familiar with it and be able to explain if there is a valid reason the vet is being reluctant.

I only want them to try her on Depocillin !!!!!
The rabbit in question came to me with infetion in her tail. Have tried to clear it up (we did succeed briefly, but she now has some incontinence). The infection is back and now with an abcsess on her tail. Just thought it would be worth trying as Baytil is not really working. She has been on the Baytrin again for 7 days. I am keeping her as clean as poss. but with the infection and abcsess this is not as easy as it sounds..!!!!

Depocillin is a very cheap drug (much cheaper than baytril) so I doubt it will be a cost issue.

It may be that your vets have never heard of it being used in rabbits...in which case you can ask your vet to call a specialist (Francis Harcourt Brown does phone consults with other vets AFAIK), or maybe print off an article to take along with you on Monday in the first instance?

It could also be that your vets can't order it from their supplier...in which case you'll need a prescription and can order it on-line or from a chemist who does vet meds

It's also possible that they want to consider other options with a recurrence, of the infection, or if they think the bone is involved. The incontinence affects matters too.
Definately a phone consult with either Francis Harcourt Brown. (I heard that she's poorly at the mo.) I don't know whether Richard Saunders does telephone consults with vets, a bun called Sora is there at the mo. http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/showthread.php?t=239323
Also Great Western Referrals do telephone consults with vets. 01793603800

A big thank you to everyone.

By the time i go to the vets on Monday I will have everything i can find printed out for them on Depocillin and anythng else i can find that might be of use.

Do they not have penicillin at all or is it just depocillin they don't have? There are other brands of the same stuff (a bit like nurofen/tesco ibuprofen is essentially the same active ingredient in a different packet) so they may well just have a different 'variety' such as duphapen. They are just made by different manufacturers and may be different strengths so require different dosages etc.

The referral clinic at Langford where Richard Saunders is will accept faxed queries from vets (details here: http://www.langfordvets.co.uk/rabbit_disease.htm) and they will respond as they fit, which may be by a return phone call. Your vet will need to make sure that the fax is marked for the attention of the rabbit specialists just to make sure that the right person picks it up.

Good luck x
