  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Pasteurella question

I seen a rabbit advertised, and it says she can never live near any other bunnies because she had Pasteurella last year. It got me wondering, is that right that they can never go with/near other bunnies?

One of mine has literally just been taken ill with this. Early stages and I'm waiting to see how he goes. He already has a wife :? She seems fine at the moment *fingers crossed* This is the thread about mine

As you will see people are completey conflicted about this. I'm very confused about it all myself even after all the advice i've gotten.

I can see the choice whilst the rabbit is actually ill, and the problems with spliting a bond etc, I was wondering because this particular advert said the bunny had been ill a year ago but no symptoms since- but that as a single bun it could never be put with another bun. Most of the stuff I googled doesn't say anything about long term prospects for bonding. The question is purely academic however! :D

I think it is generally believed that all rabbits have been exposed to Pasturella at some point. I think the disease only "takes a hold" if you like when the rabbit is under stress - ie another illness, a new home. Some will be "carriers" but never be poorly.

You could always get a snuffle bun as a companion then it won't make any difference. I think there are a few rescues that have them looking for homes.
