Hey all...

I'm new here but desperately need some advice for my 13 month old cross breed bun.
She wasn't looking very well on Thursday night as she was very quiet, lethargic, not eating or drinking as well as passing no stools or urine.
Took her to the vets on Friday morning and it turns out she has an abscess just below the bottom of her ear and a bad infection... the vet cleared out quite a lot of puss and gunk from her ear. She also seemed to have quite a lot of gas in her intestines.
We have baytril to give her once a day, 1ml and canaural ear drops to be administered twice a day. I'm also having to syringe feed and water her with baby food and recovery food.
I'm really worried though because she still looks so unwell. She has started to pass some stools again but they're very wet and sticky and have been sticking to her bum alot... I'm having to wipe her down with baby wipes.
She keeps closing her eyes and simply lying down and seemingly sleeping.
I'm really worried about her and I'm not sure if there's anything more I can be doing.
Does anyone have any experience of any of these things? If so, how did your buns get better and what treatment was used?

Thank you all

Update

Been to the emergency vets again this morning - Different practise to our usual, not going back to the usual again as they were quite snotty and very unhelpful when I rang yesterday.
Anyhoos... woke up this morning to find Pumpkin in a sticky mess with wet ears and a swollen, closed over eye. Quickly went to Minster vets on Sailsbury road in York and happened to get a VERY savvy rabbit vet! I recommend everyone in York to Minsters if they have a bun!
Have been prescribed Metacam for pain relief, some probiotic to put into her bowl of water and also ceporex injections to give her every day until next Mon when she is booked in for surgery to remove the abscess.
Turns out the sticky mess was puss and gunk which has burst out of the abscess over night... not very nice! Also have a follow up appointment tomorrow with the Minster vets in Earswick just to check how Pumpkin is getting on!
As I've not had much experience in rabbit breeds (not really noticed before as I was much younger when I kept them) It turns out Pumpkin is not a rex, she is infact a Harlequin crossbreed with some sort of giant (or giant cross) but she's already 4kg and I swear she's lost a little bit of weight over the past few days!
I have a big bun!!!!

So... yerp... thanks for the advice guys... officially LOVE this forum and will be a regular on here :)

Hi hun,

Does your bun have pain relief? It sounds to me as if she is in pain and that will stop her from eating. A rabbit which is not eating can become seriously ill extremely quickly. If she is just lying around feeling sorry for herself I would suggest taking her back to the vets. Personally I would ask for pain relief (an ear abscess must be very painful) gut stimulant and a different or additional antibiotic.

Baytril isn't generally thought to be the best antibiotic for things like abscesses. Some of the more rabbit specialist vets use it in combination with another antibiotic called metronidazole, which kills a different type of bacteria which you may find in an abscess. Some vets will also try injected penicillin - it tends to be very effective for abscesses but must be given by injection, never orally, and vets who are less confident with rabbits tend not to give it.

If I were you, I would go back to the vets and talk about pain relief (ongoing, not just a one-off jab at the vets!) gut stimulant to help get her eating again and different or additional antibiotics. If your vet won't consider these, then personally I would find another vet who will!

Good luck and I hope your little bun gets better soon x

Hey...

No, no pain relief, which i thought was rather strange! She just has baytril and ear drops at the moment and a follow up appointment on Mon.
She's barely eating or drinking unless I'm the one force-feeding her. She's normally a very active and healthy rabbit and normally isn't one for being picked up but right now, it's like she's just not bothered.
When I came downstairs this morning, her litter box was completely clear (she's a house rabbit) and her heartbeat seems quite fast to me.
The vet did give her a gut stimulant yesterday but I agree with you, I think she's in pain... It wasn't our usual vet we went to so I'm wondering whether to ring the emergency vets from our usual practise...

I'm sorry to hear your bunny is not too good. I would ring your vet and ask fro some pain killer for her as you weren't given any. Also ask about other a/b as Santa mentioned. I don't have any experience with abcesses so can't help.
