  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

He has slight head tilt, weight loss and losing balance. Thanks to this great forum I was pretty sure what he had before i walked into the vets.
She said he'll need a 28 day course of panacur and all the other buns will need a 9 day course..
She has also said not to let him near the other buns, he has a wifey bun though he'll need to be with her want he? Will she now be at risk?

What about cleaning out will this need to be done daily as usually I have a major clean once a week and litter trays changed every 2 days.

Please think about going on the forum I suggested to your previously.

Head tilt does not indicate EC. EC lowers the immune system and makes a bunny more prone to infections, such as an inner ear infection. What meds is he on for his head tilt?

Personally, I never separated a rabbit with head tilt from a friend and actively bonded one with two friends because separating can add more stress and make the situation worse, however, you have to try and do what you think is best.

Just been on the other forum and it won't let me join :? I'll go and try again.
All she has said is Panacur nothing else, what other meds do you think he should be on ? She's checked his ears and said they seemed fine.
She checked him all over and said no problems legs and reflexs were good.
He's back with his wifey bun and she's being really lovely with him :)

Ear infections are not always visible. Often they are not visible and a swab is needed. When any if mine have had headtilt they have had Convenia (although there are other antibiotics which work well with head tilt), and also Metacam because ear infections hurt. Sometimes Stemetil can help if they are rolling or disorientated- that's not one I have personally used, but one I would use if I thought it was necessary.

I wonder why it won't let you join, that's really random. :?

If the vet is pretty certain it is an active infection I would have thought he would have also prescribed metacam as an anti inflammatory, which would reduce and inflammation left by the parasite and help improve symptoms.

No she hasn't but she did say she was sure it was E.C... I'm going back to the vets in the morning, do you think I should ask ?

I would, it could potentially make a big difference. Obviously if there is permanent damage then this can not be reversed, but associated inflammation can definately be reduced with metacam. Good luck

Mischa had steroid injections, Baytril and Panacur when he had head tilt. If it happened now I'd be asking for Metacam but I didn't know about it at the time.

Thank you I will ask for that in the morning

As cookie only has a slight head tilt and hind leg weakness I think it is more likely to be EC than an ear infection so a steroid injection wouldn;t be the best way to go at the moment.

In your first post you mention giving the other bunnies a 9 day course, personally I would also give them a 28 day course as 9 days isn't effective against EC

I'm going to order online now for all the buns and will make sure they have a 28 day course..
Thank you :)
