Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Bunny cramp or something worse?

Little Leo

Young Bun
Hi everyone,

I was just playing 'chase mummy' up and down the house with Leo and all of a sudden he stretched his right leg out behind him and kind of rolled onto his side. It only lasted 5 seconds or so but it gave me the fright of my life. He was back to his normal self straight after and is running up and down again as I type.

Could it have been cramp, as he has been running around pretty much constantly since 6pm, or is it something worse that needs attention from the vet?

Thanks, from a very worried mummy :(

It SOUNDS like it could have been cramp HOWEVER I would be inclined to call the emergency vets and explain just to be sure!

I've never heard of a bunny having cramp, but it sounds logical that it could happen. I'm not sure that I would presume it was though and would definitely get him checked out anyway, just in case.

I haven't heard of buns getting cramp either.
I think it's more likely that he overstretched something slightly, or even caught a claw in the carpet slightly, not so much as to injure him, but enough to take him by surprise. Rolling onto their side is sometimes a reflex "playing dead", (their instincts are geared to assume they've been caught by a predator). My bun suddenly freezing motionless, if I accidentally lean to his side when running with him.(predator overhead).
When buns are hopping, their front feet may move alternately, but their back feet always move together.

Many thanks for your replies. Having spoken with the vet, he said that although cramp was uncommon, it could have been he strained his leg but it doesn't sound like anything serious. As always, advice was to keep an eye on his eating, drinking, toilet & make sure he's not limping.

Again, thank you to everyone. I find this forum invaluable and would have been ten times more worried without your help x x
