  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Heart tumor-Saying goodbye tomorrow

My boy Archie was at the vets this evening for a dental and xray, a large mass beside his heart showed up on the xray  I'm going to pick him up in the morning then he's going for a scan on friday. I'm totally devastated, Archie is only 4yrs old and I love him to bits  The way he's been breathing has changed in the last few weeks and I had a feeling that something wasn't right but he was still running around binkying and eating well. Is there anything at all that can be done to help him?

I would imagine that they should be able to remove it, but I guess it would depend on its placement, if your vets are not so sure when the results come back as to what can or can not be done then I would get reffered to a specialist and see if they can help.

Thank you. My vet is a specialist thankfully. I wasn't sure if it was possible to remove a heart tumour.

It may not be in the heart, just attached to the wall so I would have thought it may be able to be removed.

Archie is home now, he's doing okay but not eating much at the moment. I've been reading about heart disease in rabbits and it does sound like Thymoma  I'm able to stay with him on friday while he has his scan and tests done so hopefully we'll have a better idea of how bad it is then.

Thank you all. Will let you know how everything goes. I'm trying my best to stay positive but I'm so worried about him :(

We understand how worried you must be, he is your baby! We are all thinking of you both, sending lots of vibes for Friday! x

I'm very sorry to hear about Archie :( I really hope he will be ok. I have seen pictures of Romain removing a thymic mass from a rabbit by keyhole surgery so if it is that then hopefully he can help Archie too.
I hope everything goes ok tomorrow x

Sorry I wasn't able to update sooner, I had to go straight to work after bringing Archie home. It bad news. The mass is occupying most of the chest area, it surrounds his heart, lungs and liver, theres no way of removing it  He may have a few weeks or months to live and he's already showing signs he's not coping. Archie needs dentals every six weeks and it unlikely that he would come round from the next one. I'm totally devastated, I love him so much but theres nothing that can be done its too advanced . He'll be on daily metacam to try and help.
