Cleaning runny nose

Young Bun
Hi all,

Our newest bun Smokey has some very thick white discharge from the nose. It is tending to cake up making it hard for him to breathe. He is on antibiotic eye drops and baytril for it. But in the meantime, what works best to try to clear the nose? Right now I've just been using a dampened towel, but I'm wondering if one of those baby nose syringes might work alright. Has anyone ever tried this? or what works best in your experience?

Thanks!:)

Just in case anyone was wondering, we bought an infant nasal aspirator and it does seem to do the trick pretty well. It takes a little practice getting it positioned in such a way that it holds the suction, but if you have a bun with alot of discharge in the nose this might work well.

The one we have has the 'safety tip' on it, so I don't know if the old fashioned bulb syringes might work better or worse.

We still need to use a warm damp towel to clean the outside of the nose though.

Hope this helps someone.

How is your bun's infection responding to the baytril? Perhaps a stronger antibiotic would be more effective in clearing this up? Bisolvon can be very helpful sprinkled on food to help break down the mucus and let bun breathe more easily. Nebulisers can also help with upper respiratory infections in keeping the nasal lining well hydrated and responsive to antibiotics.
