  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

How can this be done?
Cookie seems not to be as hygenic as Jimby and does not take so much care about cleaning herself around the bum area, so she has matted fur all around her back end from wee and also she left a poop skid mark on my husbands pillow

Methods vary depending on how bad it is, sometimes non scented baby wipes will given sufficient cleaning to the area, othertimes clean the area with wet wipes to get the worst off then with someone holding the bottom, gently with luke warm water clean the area, you may need to trim any matter bits off with blunt scissors.

It is also worth considering why the bottom is as it is, consider changing the food very slowly to a higher fibre dry food or decrease the amount of dry food to encourage a higher fibre diet by encouraging more hay.

She is currently on Excel which we are not going to keep her on, we are slowley introducing the Allen and Page which is what Jimby is on, we are also cutting down on the amount as well, she was having a handful per day which is not too much but still more than we will be feeding her.
