Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Deformed testicle?

Joob-joobs

Mama Doe
Sorry for the long post...

I had the buns out doing the regular toe nail clipping yesterday and when I was checking underneath Leo I noticed a small lump type thing where you would expect a plum to be.

I adopted Leo over 3 years ago from RR and his previous owner said he had been neutered. However, in the time between I have wondered if that was the case because he always seems to be a randy wee bisum.

See this thread: http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/showthread.php?t=229627&highlight=randy

So I took him to the vet last night to get it checked out... now I've only ever had to use the vet for routine things like neutering and jabs, so I'm not convinced how rabbit savvy they are....

The only conclusion the vet could come to after inspecting the lump was that it was a small deformed testicle which has only now dropped... they said the only way to be sure was to open it up. Since Leo is over 8 years old and the lump doesn't seem to be bothering him then the vet said that he wouldn't recommend opening him up.

Not only has he always been more randy than my other buns, he has always been smellier and wouldn't take to litter training completely... which makes me think that maybe he wasn't completely neutered and this is a small testicle...

So, I need advice please. Would you request the vet opens him up to check exactly what it is, would you just keep an eye on it, as long as it is not causing him any problems or would you try to get a second opinion from a different vet?? Help!!

I'd seek an opinion from a more Bunny savvy Vet.

If you have had him for 3 years then I doubt you'd have only just noticed this had it always been there. In which case a recent change may be significant and I'd want reassurance from a Bunny Savvy Vet examining him :)

Thanks Jane. Yeah, I have been checking underneath regularly and it has definitely not always been there.

How do you go about getting another vet to have a look? Can I just phone up another practice and book an appt or do I have to get his records etc from the current vet and let them know?

I agree. Undescended testicles are very prone to cancer because when they are in the body they are forced to be at higher temperatures than when outside. I would agree that getting another check would also be preferable incase it could be something sinister causing it to drop.

I would explain to your Vet that you would like to obtain the opinion of a specialist and so could he/she refer you :)
