I'm gonna insure Benny and Lola....

Was talking to a girl I met tonight in a friends house. Turns out we had something in common - love for bunnies. Hers sadly died 6 weeks ago of a tumour. He was only 2. Anyhoo - she said the vet bill, just to find out what was wrong with him and begin some treatment was over £1000!!! They had him insured so Petplan paid out.

First thing in morning, I'm ringing Petplan!!!! Should have done it long ago!

Just thought I'd share - rabbit vet bills can sure add up.

She says she won't be getting any more rabbits because they are far too complex and too much can go wrong with them - too much of a worry! Don't we know it!!

Yes, I couldn't agree more, it's totally worth it.

Sods law, I was researching bunny insurance when Crumpet became ill, so unfortunately hadn't insured him yet, I just didn't think I needed to rush cos he was so young?

Either way, the bills add up, emergency vets are £130 with meds on top, and an overnight stay in the vets with IV and other meds is £150 a night. So it soon adds up. Would have paid it thousands of times over if it would have helped though.

Let us know what they quote you for your buns if that's okay? I'm curious for our other two  (who are identical to yours!)

sorry to hear about the ladies loss x

I agree, Petplan paid out over £600 for my Kermit when he got EC / Headtilt. Then i have just got £300 for Inca having EC!!!!

I put off getting insurance til I had paid other debts off, but then Blackie got his molar spurs, and that was £170, and this is an exemption on his insurance now, so I'll have that to pay out for life...

pearls treatment was over 800 quid and pet plan have paid out a few ememrgency vets bills for Alvins stasis at over 300 quid a time

deffo worth it :wave::wave::wave:

Definitely go for it. I've just made two claims one for Honey and one for Frankie so it is definitely worth it, both were unexpected so you never know what will happen. They pay out really quickly. It also gives you the option if you haven't got a big saving pot to go to a specialist.

wouldn't molar spurs be exempt anyway? When I rang petplan and two other providers they said that any kind of filing is considered cosmetic.

It's one of the reasons I personally don't insure my rabbits. The insurance for the three of them is £360 a year, I feel better off putting the money to one side to pay for things if I need to, especially since you have to pay an excess anyway and the more common dental problems aren't even covered.

That said, if an expensive vet bill came up I know I would be able to find the money, if I didn't have that backup I might consider insurance.

I have Jas and Daphne insured and I ran up a £600 vet bill in the first couple of weeks  I'm probably blacklisted now  It's good for my situation right now.

If I only had two I would insure them, but I'm going to set up a savings account and pay the money into it, if I insured my entire clan it would cost £60 a month, soon £70 a month when I have Cass's wife. so I'm just going to save that amount a month and spend it on vets bills if I have to, and if not spend it on treats and toys ;)

I think this is correct, when I getting insurance I read all the small print could find! I went with help u cover as they do cover for dental work after 2 years with them, which sounds reasonable to me. I don't know what they are like with paying out yet...

Last they quoted was £17.50 per month for 2 bunnies. When you think of the peace of mind and that you could spend that on magazines (not that I can really afford magazines at the min!!), it is worth it. I personally don't have the back up to pay £500 let alone into thousands! :(

Sounds like a good plan when you only have two, especially bearing in mind lops are prone to dental issues :)

Blackberry is exempt from and dental work - it states in on his insurance certificate, because I had to declare any previous treatments. He's also exempt from treatment for gut issues.

Clo & Butters have both had Stasis so have an exemption for treatment from gut issues.

Has anyone used Exotic Direct? They have quoted me around £14.50 a month for both my new buns whereas Pet Plan are quoting a ridiculous £44.50!

Goodness!! What kinda buns are they? Petplan quoted me 17.50 for two 1 year old bunnies....

I just got quoted £32 a month for my four. I think I will start a fund as well, then when it's built up maybe reduce the insurance cover, or use it to cover exemptions that might have occurred by then! ;)

They're Dutch & 3 months old today. The only reason I can think of for the high quote is living in London maybe?
