  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Poorly bunny?

Young Bun
Rolo is sitting and hardly eating (he normally has a healthy appetite). I've seperated him from Smartie and brought him inside in his travel box (it's big enough for him to move about) with some hay and water - had to put water in a dish as he was frantically biting his water bottle when I got home from work - (bottle was full and working). I have not changed his diet. He is not normally so lathargic. Been reading your posts and wondered if someone could help ?
Of course if he does not improve I'll take him to the vet,he has never had any problems before :(

Could his water bottle have become blocked at all? It's been an incredibly hot day and if he's been unable to get to water, it could have caused him to become like this.

Has he drank any of the water at all from the bowl? I'd run some of his favourite greens under the tap and put them in a bowl with some excess water for him

Edit: Sorry, just realised you said the water bottle was working...

Thanks for replying :) Yes he has drunk some water. I may be over- reacting but he just doesn't seem his normal self.

If you've got some of his favourite treats try him on those. It's important that a rabbit constantly eats and poops so it's a bit of a worry if he's not eating.

You could try keeping him warm and gently massaging his belly to help him if he's got a sore stomach. I wouldn't wait too long before taking him to the vet though especially if you've never encountered problems like it before as it may be a symptom of something else such as teeth problems (rabbits will go off food if their teeth are causing them pain).

My Roly had a similar episode a few months ago but the vet sorted him right out with gut stimulants and some fluids under the skin to keep him hydrated. Assuming there's no blockage I expect you'll get metaclopramide (gut stimulant), metacam (pain killer), zantac syrup (another gut stimulant) and possibly fluids too.

Let us know how he is in the next few hours. Hopefully he'll recover on his own.

Separation from a bonded partner will only cause further stress to a poorly bunny, they should be kept together if possible. Can you bring Smartie inside too? Set them up in a room in your house? If they are used to being outside then unless Rolo is very cold he would probably be better with his friend in his usual environment - less stress, especially as it is summer it is quite warm out there tonight. However, if you feel you can keep a closer eye on him inside and he feels cool, especially around the ears, then do bring them both in together - both for Rolo emotionally and also to prevent breaking any bonds.

Is he eating and pooping? at all? If not, and he is still lethargic then he needs to see the emergency vet TONIGHT and it must not wait until the morning. Good luck x

I may be over reacting too Katrina and I hope I am but in my experience when you 'feel' it, you are usually right.
If he has not improved, then I really would take him tonight.
