Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

tumour in foot prognosis

Young Bun
hi, i am looking for a bit of advice/experiences of others. my rabbit ben who is only 3 and a half has a tumour in his foot. this has been going on for a while but it has taken until now to diagnose as originally vets thought it was an absess and then was not sure what it was. the mass is on the equivilent of his wrist of his front foot and he has not really been bearing weight on it for a couple of months in total now. yesterday he had a biopsy to 100% confirm the nature and severity of the tumour. The results should be back by the end of the week. I am just beside myself with worry and uncertainty. i am guessing that the prognosis is bad and that i should prepare for the worst. does anyone have any advice or experience of this kind of thing? is there still hope? i want to do the best for him and give him every opportunity but i obviously dont want to prolong things if he is in pain or suffering. thanks

This is really a tough one, I fortunatly have no experience on this matter and hope I never will but I did not want to read and run.
It may be that he has to have his foot amputated if the tumour has not spread?
I would make sure you seek the advise of a very rabbit savvy vet or even an exotic specialist before making any final decisions.

Try and keep calm until the results are back as until the cause is known (and if that is a tumour, what kind and how aggressive it is likely to be will be important) then it isn't possible to make any decisions or know the prognosis.
Even worst case scenario, if it is a malignant tumour or very aggressive infection, there are treatment options. Bunnies do cope with limb amputation and if this removes all affected tissue then he could have a completely normal lifespan.
