Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Was wondering if anyone could help....

Gemuke

New Kit
Hello,

Was wondering if anyone could give us a little bit of advise. We brought two baby rabbits in Feb this year which we keep as indoor bunnies in the same cage as we were told they are both male. As from this morning, one of the boys has been acting a bit oddly. He started digging in his cage (which neither of them normally do), chewing things he wouldn't normally chew and lying flat on his belly with both his front and back paws spread out. We have noticed a few patches of very dark urine since cleaning the cage this morning and the bunny in question, seems to have a bulbous bottom, if that makes sense. They do try to mate each, so we were wondering if in fact this little rabbit was actually a girl and is pregnant. We would really appreciate it if anyone could give us some advice on the above. Many Thanks....

If you have 2 male rabbits I am assuming that they are unneutered, to remain happy they will need to be neutered as their hormones will be peaking which can end up in injuries as a result of fighting. Generally they will not reach the age of 5 months without fighting.

On the other hand you could have 2 females or a male / female pair. If you have a male /female pair it is likely that the female will be pregnant.

I would suggest booking them both into the vets for sexing and neutering as a matter of urgency.

I would wonder if this bunny mounted his 'friend' the wrong way round and possibly got bitten (possibly on his penis)

I too would suggest an immediate vet trip- tonight.

I don't have experience with does I'm afraid, but I know digging is one of the signs of iminant laber. Has she been building a nest? On the other hand, it could be that he/she is ill. Is she eating, drinking and pooing ok? I'd defiantely get them BOTH checked by a vet tonight, just in case, and have them booked in for neutering. They'll both need to be neutered either way to avoid fighting, and unwanted babies of course.

Thankyou for all of your replies. They both have been eating, drinking and going to the toilet the same as normal as we decided to keep an eye on this throughout the day. They do mount each other the wrong way round but they only try to mate each other in their cage, so we haven't seen them do this recently either. We will ring the vets now and see what they say. Thanks once again for all of your help.:D

Any news on your buns, we had similar dilemma where we were told we had two girls but aftee seeing them humping i got little concerned although i now know boys do that too lol, but we have had our sexed (after 3 attempts) and have two boys they both had their manhood removed today and i am glad i did as they love each other so much and i would hate to break that bond they recovering as i type, hope you can get your buns:wave: sexed asap
