Snuffles/Pasteurella..most effective antibiotic?

Nicola3

Mama Doe
Hello,

My Herman Bunster is suffering from snuffles/pasteurella at the moment. He's previously been prescribed injectable marbocyl. Is there a more effective antibiotic that can be used to treat snuffles...? I know marbocyl is used for respiratory infections.

Any info/advice much appreciated.

Thank you,

Nicola and Herman x x

Hello

Thank you so much for replying. I could try him on some dried echinacea from the Herbal range I suppose..is that what you use? I'm going to have to take him back to the vet tomorrow though as his breathing isn't very good. Just wondered what antibiotic was the most effective at clearing up a repiratory infection.

Love,

Nicola and Herman x x x

no i use the liquid mix get it from Holland and Barratt its a natural antibiotic.
whats also important is good vetilation so if any come down with it they are moved out side to help them that little bit better

It's a bit of a difficult question to answer really, because it really depends on exactly what bacteria there are, where they are, and what they are resistant to. The only real way to tell is to get a culture and sensitivity test done (before antibiotics are started otherwise the results will be affected) although they do have an annoying habit of sometimes coming back with nothing having grown. I still think it's worth doing up front though as if it's likely to be a recurrent problem (and if this is the second time it has flared, it may well be), you can spend literally months or years faffing about with different antibiotics trying to work out something suitable.

My vet usually goes for engemycin/terramycin LA as a first choice, as it is broad spectrum and is one injection every 3 days so it's pretty low stress to give if you can inject. Others include septrin (inactivated by pus so not a good choice for very pussy snuffles), penicillin (injected only) especially if it might be a tooth root abscess, and/or metronidazole if the infection is tooth root related. Metranidazole is what seems to work best for my little snuffly angel, hers is tooth root related - but it does not kill pasteurella, which is why it's important to try and get a sample taken first. Depending on where it is, your vet may be able to do a conscious or sedated tear duct flush and get a sample from the nose from the flushed liquid, or a deep nasal swab can be taken but the bun will probably need to be fully sedated for that. Many vets now also think that a long course (maybe 6 weeks or more) is necessary to kill off all the deep-seated bacteria without just letting those more resistant to the antibiotic to flourish.

I do think it's important that you really treat these aggressively as they can become chronic very, very easily - more effort up front could well save you years of ongoing hassle!

I was told that my little one (ha ha he's large!!) would be tried on a combination of Penicllin and marbocyl. At the moment he's not on anything after a 4 week course lo baytril then marbocyl did nothing. I just keep an eye on him and have been told to try steam inhilation with Olbas oil as this will help with the airways.

i thought the use of penicillin was contraindicated in rabbits? except for treatment of T.cuniculi (syphalis sp?)?

Penicillin is often used in the treatment of Pasteurellosis in Rabbits. It is only ever given by injection as given orally it can cause fatal enterotoxaemia.

I have several Rabbits who's chronic respiratory tract disease is managed with Depocillin injections.

Hello

Thank you all for your responses. I took Herman to the vets last week and my vet has put him on teramycin injections once every 3 days. He started the injections on Thursday so has only had two injections so far and I haven't noticed any improvement yet. His breathing is really bad at the moment so my vet didn't want to put herman under any GAs or procedures that would stress him out. Just a trip to the vets stresses him.

At some point we were hoping if we could get him stable enough we would like to have some x rays carried out to check its not tooth root related but at the moment we need to get his breathing better.

Thank you for all your help. If anyone has any more info that may be of help please let me know.

Thank you,

Nicola and Herman x x x
