  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Do I Need To Clip Snowflake's Nails???

Because they are a little long, and she scratched me by accident so do I need to clip them? Do I need a special nail clipper or something?

Note: The scratch didn't bleed, swell, nothing. It didn't hurt much so please don't worry!

;)

Most rabbits need their nails clipped as they don't wear them down enough. You can get your vet to clip them for you or do it yourself.

A rabbits nail includes a part called the 'quick', this is the pink bit in the nail. Be careful and don't cut the quick as it will hurt your bun and make them bleed. I'd recommend you take Snowflake to the vet for the first time and ask them to show you if you're not sure, or if she has dark coloured nails. Dark nails are much harder to cut, you can shine a torch under the nail to see the quick better.

You're best with a pair of clippers like this http://www.petsathome.com/shop/claw-trimmers-by-options-15832 I got mine from ebay and they were a little cheaper. Be aware that straight after you've cut the nails the edges will be very sharp, she'll wear them down herself.

If Snowflake is a fidget, wrap her up in a 'bunny burrito' basically this is just wrapped firmly in a towel with the bit you need exposed. So, one foot sticking out at a time. This will stop her wriggling about and give you more time to see what you're doing.

If you do clip the quick by accident, don't panic! Hold some pressure to the nail, like a cotton ball, and wait for the bleeding to stop. Cornstarch is also good for it. I've done it myself and I felt awful but these things do happen so don't feel bad.

Make sure you clean your scratch out too - outdoor bunnies have the whole garden under their fingernails :wave:
